Aquamarine and bloodstone are the March birthstones: one pale and oceanic, one dark green and flecked with red. March gets two because it can't make up its mind. One week you're craving stillness and sea air. The next you need armour just to get out of bed. Aquamarine for the soft days. Bloodstone for the hard ones.
This one's personal. I'm a March baby and a Pisces, so aquamarine is mine twice over, and I'm a water lover to the core. Bloodstone I borrow for the hard weeks. This guide is for the March birthdays, the Pisces energy, and anyone standing at the edge of something new, not sure whether to ease in or dive.

What Is the Birthstone for March?
Most months get one stone. March gets two, and it's not by accident. Aquamarine and bloodstone represent the push and pull that defines this month: the softness of winter releasing, the sharpness of what's arriving. One is ocean energy: clear, fluid, expansive. The other is earth energy: dense, rooted, ancient. Together they hold the full range of what spring asks of you.
March isn't the only month with more than one stone. June and August got three, and December got four. Here's every stone, month by month, and why the lists don't always agree.
What Colour Is the March Birthstone?
Aquamarine runs from barely-there sea-glass blue to a clear, deeper blue, with a hint of green in the paler stones. Bloodstone is the other end of the paint box: deep forest green, opaque, with flecks of red that gave it the name. If someone says March is light blue, they mean aquamarine. If they say dark green with red spots, they've met bloodstone.
Why One Aquamarine Costs More Than Another
Grade, not authenticity. Price climbs with depth of colour and clarity. A clear, saturated blue costs far more than a pale, cloudy one, and both are real aquamarine. Most aquamarine is gently heat-treated to clear out the green and leave the blue. That's standard and permanent, and nothing to worry about.
What matters is the label. Aqua glass and lab-grown aqua quartz look the part for less, which is fine as long as nobody calls them aquamarine. Here, the genuine pieces say aquamarine, the Aqua Blue Spike Necklace ($65) is hydro quartz (lab-grown quartz in Pacific blue), and the Exquisite, Aria and Pebble pieces are glass. Same colour, three honest price points.
Bloodstone has its own catch: a lot of it is dyed or reconstituted, which is why I don't carry it. More on that below.

Aquamarine — The Stone of Calm & Clarity
Aquamarine is named for the sea, and it carries that energy completely. Pale blue-green, cool to the touch, clear when held to the light. Ancient sailors wore it as a talisman before crossing open water. I wear it when I'm about to say something difficult. It has a way of helping the right words surface.
What Aquamarine is for
This stone is a grounding anchor for the throat. Not in a chakra-textbook way, but in the way that sitting by the ocean changes your breathing without you deciding to let it. It's a reminder to slow down, find the flow, and trust what's coming rather than forcing it. Aquamarine is particularly resonant for Pisces season, when intuition is high and the noise of the world can drown it out. Ask a Pisces. I'd know.
I reach for aquamarine when I'm overwhelmed, when I've been saying yes to too many things, or when I need to have a conversation I've been avoiding. It doesn't give you the words. It just creates the quiet where the words can form.

Bloodstone — The Warrior's Stone
Bloodstone doesn't get enough credit. It's not flashy: dark green with flecks of red, like earth after rain. But there's something ancient and sure about it. Its older name is heliotrope, Greek for "sun-turner." People kept it in their pockets before hard conversations, before anything that required showing up fully and not flinching.
What Bloodstone is for
Where aquamarine softens, bloodstone steadies. It's a grounding touchstone for the moments when you need to act. Not process, not flow, but move. I think of it as the stone you reach for when you've done enough reflecting and it's time to do the thing.
It's also a deeply protective stone. If aquamarine is the open sea, bloodstone is solid ground. For anyone going through a season of change, having both feels right: one to navigate the transition gracefully, one to remind you that you're capable of whatever comes next.
A straight answer about bloodstone
I don't currently carry bloodstone. I'd rather tell you that than sell you something dyed green and call it close enough.
If it's the quality you're after (dark green, grounded, the stone you hold before the hard thing), these two do the same job and are what I'd hand you:
- Moss Agate Mala Bracelet — $85. Double wrap, deep green, meant to be held while you think.
- Green Aventurine Stud Earrings — $35. Quiet, wearable, on every day without thinking about it.
Neither one is bloodstone. Both are real stone.

Rituals & Affirmations for March Energy
You don't need an elaborate setup. The most effective rituals are the ones simple enough to do. Here are two, one for each stone, one for each side of March.
Aquamarine: A Ritual for Clarity
Fill a small bowl with water. Set your aquamarine piece beside it (wearing it works just as well). Sit quietly for five minutes, no phone. Breathe slowly. Let the visual softness of the stone do the work. If something has been sitting unanswered in your mind, this is the space where it tends to surface. Finish by placing your hands over the stone and saying: "I flow with ease. I trust what I know."
Bloodstone: A Ritual for Courage
Hold the piece in your right hand, the giving, acting hand. Name the thing you've been putting off. Say it out loud if you can. Then set a single concrete first step. Not the whole plan, just the first move. Bloodstone isn't about summoning bravery from nowhere; it's a reminder that you already have it. Finish with: "I am steady. I move forward."
Journal Prompts for March
These work well alongside either ritual, or on their own with a good cup of tea:
- Where in my life am I ready for renewal this spring?
- What have I been carrying quietly that I'm ready to set down?
- What is the one thing I keep almost doing, and what would it feel like to do it?

How to Wear March Birthstones
Then: sailors wore aquamarine to get across open water. Now: it gets you across the staff meeting.
Both stones are wearable: aquamarine for its soft blue-green tones that layer beautifully with gold and other crystals, bloodstone for its bold contrast and earthy depth. You don't have to choose one.
Everyday Aquamarine
A simple aquamarine necklace worn close to the throat is the most intentional placement, close to where the voice lives. Layered with a dainty gold chain it becomes the kind of piece you forget you're wearing until someone asks about it.
Green as a Statement
Deep green lends itself to rings and pendants, pieces that feel weighty and deliberate. If you're someone who reaches for your jewelry before something important, a green grounding piece is worth having in your collection.
Stack Both
Aquamarine's cool tones and deep greens complement each other in a layered look: contrast without clashing. A stacked bracelet set carrying both energies is a strong choice for the whole of spring. Build one from the Crystal Bracelet Stacks collection (buy 2, get 1 free), and if you want the method first, this guide walks through it.
March Birthstone Jewelry Gifts
These make deeply thoughtful gifts, not just for March birthdays, but for anyone in a season of transition. Aquamarine says "I see your softness." A grounding green stone says "I believe in your strength." Together they say "I know you need both right now."
March birthday gifts: the cheat sheet
- For the one with something to say: the Aquamarine Throat Chakra Bracelet ($35). Genuine aquamarine, adjustable, stacks with anything.
- For the one who wants the ocean, not the price tag: the Aria Necklace ($45), the March best seller, in aqua glass.
- For the one who can't pick a stone: the Faceted Gemstone Bracelet Set ($65). Aquamarine, lapis, amethyst and moonstone.
- For the Pisces who lives near water, or wishes she did: the one-of-a-kind Aquamarine & Potato Pearl Necklace ($185). The one I wear.
- For the one who's all warrior, no ocean: the Moss Agate Mala Bracelet ($85). Not bloodstone. Same grounded green.
Gift-worthy moments for these stones: March birthdays, Pisces season, new beginnings after a hard chapter, spring equinox, anyone who's been carrying something heavy and is ready to set it down. Find the full selection in the March birthstone collection.
The Daffodil, While We're Here
March's birth flower is the daffodil (the jonquil, if you're being formal). It stands for new beginnings, and it's the first thing brave enough to come up through the snow. In Calgary it usually gets snowed on at least once for its trouble. Very March.
March's Sky, Briefly
March's full moon is the Worm Moon, named for the ground softening enough for the worms to come back. The Spring Equinox lands around the 20th: equal light, equal dark, and the start of the astrological new year as Pisces hands over to Aries. The Spring Equinox ritual takes ten minutes, and the March New Moon ritual is the reset before it.
March Birthstone FAQ
What is the birthstone for March?
March has two birthstones: Aquamarine and Bloodstone. Aquamarine is the more widely known of the two. Its pale blue-green tones are associated with calm, clarity, and emotional flow. Bloodstone is the traditional birthstone, a dark green stone flecked with red, associated with courage, vitality, and grounding. Both are meaningful choices for March birthdays.
What is aquamarine good for spiritually?
Aquamarine is associated with clarity, calm communication, and emotional balance. It's often used as a grounding anchor during times of stress or transition, a reminder to breathe, slow down, and trust the process. It's connected to the throat in intention-setting practice, and is a popular choice for anyone working through difficult conversations or creative blocks.
What is bloodstone used for?
Bloodstone has been used for centuries as a talisman for courage and resilience. It's a grounding stone, useful as an intention anchor before challenging moments, decisions, or periods of change. It's associated with strength, vitality, and the ability to move forward when things feel hard.
Do you sell bloodstone jewelry?
Not at the moment. Bloodstone is widely imitated (a lot of what's sold under that name is dyed or reconstituted) and I'd rather carry nothing than carry something I can't label honestly. If you want the same grounded, dark-green quality, moss agate and green aventurine are the two I'd point you to, and both are genuine stone.
Can you wear aquamarine and bloodstone together?
Absolutely. They're complementary energies: aquamarine brings the flow, bloodstone brings the foundation. Wearing both makes sense for a season like spring, when you're navigating transition and need both softness and strength. Aquamarine's cool tones and deep greens create a striking, grounded combination.
Is aquamarine a good gift for a March birthday?
One of the best. Aquamarine has an immediate visual appeal (that soft, luminous blue-green) and carries a meaning that resonates with almost anyone. It's a thoughtful gift for Pisces season, spring birthdays, or anyone who could use a reminder to find their calm. Browse the March birthstone collection for current pieces.
How do I care for aquamarine jewelry?
Aquamarine is 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, so it's tough enough for daily wear, and it's stable in light, so a sunny windowsill won't fade it. Avoid hard knocks and sudden heat, and clean it with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. For every other piece in your box, here's how to clean gemstone jewelry, stone by stone and metal by metal.
Aquamarine and Bloodstone. The ocean and the earth. The breath and the step. March asks a lot: renewal, courage, the willingness to begin again. These two stones have been holding that energy for a long time. Find the one that's calling you, or wear both and cover your bases.
