For about fifteen years I would have told you my spirit animal was the dragonfly, and I'd have had a good story ready about why. Transformation, light, the year everything changed. It was true when I said it.
Then I hit a stretch where transformation wasn't the problem. I'd done plenty of transforming. What I actually needed was to stop saying yes to everyone, and the dragonfly had nothing to say about that. The snake did.
That's the part nobody tells you: your animal isn't a personality test result you get once and file away. It's closer to a tool you pick up for the work in front of you. Mine changed because my life did. Yours will too.
Nobody assigns you one, either. There's no register, no ceremony, no gatekeeper checking credentials at the door. You notice that hummingbirds keep showing up in a hard month, or that you've been drawn to snakes since long before you could explain why, and at some point you stop calling it a coincidence.
This is the hub for every spirit animal guide I've written. The Spirit Animal Jewelry collection is where the pieces live.
How to Find Yours (Three Honest Options)
In roughly ascending order of effort:
- Take the quiz. Sixty seconds, and it tells you which animal matches where you actually are rather than where you'd like to be. Start here.
- Notice what keeps turning up. In dreams, on walks, in the three unrelated things you read this week. Repetition is the signal. Your attention is already doing the work — you just haven't been writing it down.
- Pick the one you want to be more like. Slightly heretical, entirely valid. If you need more owl in your life this year, wear the owl. The animal is a reminder, not a diagnosis.
There is no wrong answer, and there's no version of this you can fail at.
Signs Your Animal Has Already Found You
Most people arrive here suspecting they already know. If any of these land, you're probably right:
- It keeps appearing and you've started noticing that you're noticing. Not the first time. The fourth.
- You had a reaction you couldn't explain. A piece of jewelry, a photograph, something on a shelf — and you felt oddly claimed by it.
- Someone else spotted it before you did. "That's so you" is data.
- It showed up during a specific chapter. Animals tend to arrive alongside change, not during the calm.
- You keep coming back to it even after dismissing it. The one you talked yourself out of is usually the one.
- It describes who you're becoming, not who you've been. This is the most common version, and the most useful. Your animal is often a half-step ahead of you.
If you read that list and one animal kept surfacing — that's your answer. The quiz is a shortcut, not a verdict.

The Animals, Grouped by What You Actually Need
The table is for scanning. This is for choosing. Most people don't arrive knowing which animal they want — they arrive knowing what they're dealing with. Start there instead.
If you need protection and boundaries
This is the group for the woman who has spent years being the reliable one and is only now working out that reliability without limits is just availability.
The wolf is the obvious one, and deservedly. She's loyal to the bone, she reads a room in three seconds, and she has teeth she's willing to use — which is the part people forget. Wolf energy isn't only devotion. It's devotion with a perimeter. If you're the person who holds the family together and has never once been asked whether you'd like a turn being held, the wolf is a permission slip.
The scarab is the oldest talisman on this page by several thousand years. Egyptian, worn for protection and renewal at once — the idea that being guarded and being reborn aren't opposites. It's the quieter option if the wolf feels too fierce for where you are. Less bared teeth, more closed door.
Pair either with black tourmaline or malachite if you want the stone to say the same thing the animal does.
If you're in the middle of becoming something else
The biggest group, and not by accident — most people go looking for a spirit animal during a change, not during a calm stretch.
The butterfly is for the middle of it. Not the triumphant after photo — the messy middle, where the old version of you is gone and the next one hasn't introduced herself. The butterfly is the only creature whose transformation is total; it doesn't grow, it dissolves and reassembles. If you're in the part that feels like coming apart, that's not failure. That's the process, and it's the whole reason this animal means what it means.
The snake is sharper. Where the butterfly transforms, the snake sheds — it leaves something behind on purpose and doesn't go back for it. A job, a friendship, a story you'd been telling about yourself. Snake energy is for the woman who knows exactly what she's outgrown and hasn't said so out loud yet.
The phoenix is for after the fire. Not metaphorical inconvenience — actual loss. It's the animal for rebuilding when there wasn't a choice about whether to rebuild.
The dragonfly is the lightest of the four. It moves in all six directions without turning its body, which is a fair description of adaptability that doesn't cost you your shape. Reach for it when the change is real but you'd rather not be heavy about it.

If you need to see it more clearly
The owl is for the one who already knows and hasn't said it yet. She sees in the dark, she waits, and she moves only when she's certain. The underrated part of owl energy isn't the seeing — it's the discretion. Knowing something and choosing not to announce it is its own kind of power, and it's rarely described as one.
The bird is altitude. Where the owl sees into things, the bird sees over them — the view from higher up than you've been standing. It's the animal for the problem you've been too close to for too long.
Both pair naturally with clear quartz for focus, or lapis lazuli if the thing you need to do is say what you've seen.
If you need to keep going without burning out
The least glamorous group and probably the most useful.
The bee is the compounding one. No single trip matters; the accumulation is the entire point. If you're doing work whose results are months away and you've started to wonder whether it counts — it counts. Bee energy is for staying with something long enough for it to become something.
The turtle is pace, and carrying home with you wherever you go. It's for the woman who's been told she's slow by people who mistook slow for careful. The turtle doesn't rush and doesn't arrive late.
The hummingbird is the one I'd argue for hardest. It looks decorative and isn't — it's the animal for finding sweetness on purpose, particularly in a stretch that isn't offering much. That's not optimism. That's a discipline, and it's harder than it sounds.

The Four Elements
Some people don't land on an animal at all. If none of the above pulls, try the element you'd say you are — most people answer that one instantly, which is usually a sign it's the right question.
- Earth — steady, practical, the one everyone leans on. Pairs with tiger eye, black tourmaline.
- Water — feeling first, adaptable, reads the room before anyone speaks. Pairs with moonstone.
- Fire — momentum, appetite, the one who starts things. Pairs with carnelian, citrine.
- Air — ideas, perspective, three steps ahead in the conversation. Pairs with clear quartz, blue topaz.

Wearing It Without Overthinking It
A talisman does its job in ordinary hours, not ceremonial ones. Wear the piece on the days you need the reminder — the meeting, the appointment, the conversation you've been putting off. That's the entire mechanism, and it's enough.
If you'd rather choose the stone yourself than take the pairing above as given, the crystal properties guide lists what every stone is traditionally for. And when it's time to clean a piece, check which stones can't get wet first — malachite and labradorite are both on the no-water list, and they turn up in a lot of these pairings.
One More Thing About Animals
It would be strange to write two thousand words about animals as symbols and say nothing about the actual ones.
A share of every Crystals & Paws piece goes to animal rescue. My two are rescues — Boo and Willow — and they are the reason that collection exists rather than a marketing decision I made on purpose. Wearing a wolf is a fine thing. Helping an actual animal is a better one, and they aren't mutually exclusive.
Spirit Animal FAQ
How do I find my spirit animal?
Three ways that all work. Notice which animal recurs in your life, dreams or attention. Take a quiz for a shortcut. Or simply choose the quality you're trying to grow into and wear the animal that represents it. There's no authority who assigns these, and no version of this you can get wrong.
Can my spirit animal change?
Yes, and it usually does. Mine went from dragonfly to snake when what I needed stopped being transformation and started being boundaries. The animal that carried you through one chapter isn't necessarily the one you need in the next. That shift is a sign the practice is working, not a sign you got it wrong the first time.
Can I have more than one spirit animal?
Plenty of people do, and it tends to work best when each one is doing a different job — one for how you move through the world, one for what you're currently working on. If you're wearing three at once and couldn't say what any of them is for, that's decoration rather than practice. Which is allowed. Just call it what it is.
What's the difference between a spirit animal, a totem and a power animal?
The terms get used interchangeably in modern practice, though they come from distinct traditions — several of them Indigenous, with specific cultural meanings that aren't generic. I use "spirit animal" here as the common shorthand, and I'd rather say that plainly than pretend the words are neutral. What I'm describing is an animal symbol you choose to carry, not a claim on anyone's ceremony.
Which crystal goes with my spirit animal?
The table above gives a traditional pairing for each, but the honest answer is: pick the stone whose meaning matches what you're actually working on. The animal names the quality; the stone names the intention. If they point at the same thing, you've chosen well. The crystal properties guide has the full list.
Do I have to believe in this for it to work?
No. Treat it as symbolism and it still works, because that's what it always was. A wedding ring isn't magic either. Wearing something that means a specific thing to you changes how often you think about that thing — that's the mechanism, and it doesn't require faith to run.
