What the phoenix means

Rebirth, and the specific version of it that costs something. The phoenix doesn't get renewed gently — it burns down completely and reassembles from what's left. Greek accounts describe a cycle of five hundred years; Egyptian versions tie the bennu bird to the sun and to the flooding of the Nile; Chinese tradition has the fènghuáng, which is less about fire and more about virtue and balance.

What every version shares is that the ending is required. That's why it's the piece people buy at the far end of something rather than in the middle of it.

Who wears it

Sobriety anniversaries. Leaving a marriage. Finishing treatment. Rebuilding a business. The phoenix is the least subtle symbol in this collection and that's usually the point — people wearing one generally want to be able to look down and see it.

It's also, worth saying, a symbol that ages well. It doesn't stop meaning anything once the hard part is over; it just becomes a record.

Choosing a piece

Phoenix designs are elaborate by nature — spread wings, long tail feathers, often coloured enamel or stone set into the plumage. That means size matters more than usual: a small phoenix loses the tail, which is where the drama lives.
