Studs, drops or hoops

Studs are the ones that get worn. A gemstone stud — amazonite, tiger's eye, labradorite, opal — goes on in the morning and is never thought about again. If you're buying your first crystal earrings, or buying for someone whose taste you don't know, start here.

Drops move, and movement is what catches light. Faceted glass and hydro quartz drops throw colour across a room in a way a flat stone can't. Teardrops and marquise shapes lengthen; round pebbles soften. This is the category people buy for an event and then wear far more than they planned to.

Huggies and hoops sit close to the lobe and go with everything. The easiest thing to wear if you have multiple piercings, and the easiest to sleep in if you're the type.

Weight, and why it matters more than you think

Long earrings are bought for how they look in a photo and abandoned for how they feel by 3pm. A large stone on a thin wire drags. If you already know your lobes are sensitive, look for shorter drops, lever-backs rather than fish hooks, and lighter materials — faceted glass weighs considerably less than the same shape cut in stone.

Lever-backs and screw-backs also stay put. Fish hooks are lovely and occasionally end up on the floor of a restaurant.

Posts and sensitive ears

Sterling silver posts and surgical stainless steel are the two safe options for most people. Nickel is the usual culprit behind itching and swelling, and our plated pieces are nickel-free for exactly that reason. If your ears have been difficult your whole life, stick to the sterling silver post and stainless steel listings and you'll be fine.

Matching, or deliberately not

If you want the earrings and the necklace to actually agree, buy them together — that's what matching sets exist for, and it removes the guesswork on a gift entirely. The Exquisite sets come in seven colours, several of which line up with birth months.

If you'd rather mismatch on purpose, that's a real thing people do and it looks considered rather than careless as long as the metal matches.

Stones worth knowing

Amazonite for calm and the throat chakra. Tiger's eye for the week you have to be brave on schedule. Labradorite for the in-between. Amethyst for the thinking that won't stop. Opal and opalite for shift and shimmer. Faceted glass and hydro quartz where the point is the light rather than the stone — and every listing says which it is.

Keeping them right

Earrings live near hair products, which is the fastest way to dull a plated finish. On last, off first. Wipe them down now and then. Full detail in the jewelry cleaning guide.

Questions people actually ask

Are these hypoallergenic?

Sterling silver posts and surgical stainless steel suit almost everyone, and the plated pieces are nickel-free. If you react to most earrings, filter to those two and you should be fine.

How heavy are the drop earrings?

Lighter than they look. The faceted glass drops in particular weigh far less than the same shape cut in stone — that's the whole reason they can be that size and still be wearable all evening.

Can I wear them in the shower or pool?

Waterproof PVD stainless steel, yes. Sterling silver will survive but dull. Plated settings and porous stones like opal, turquoise and labradorite — take them off.

Is the stone real?

Every listing states it plainly: genuine, lab-created, hydro quartz or glass. Lab-created and hydro are real materials, not fakes — they're just grown rather than dug up, and priced accordingly.

Do the earrings come with a matching necklace?

Some do. Look at matching sets or the Exquisite collection, where the necklace and earrings are cut from the same colour.

What's a good pair for a first gift?

Gemstone studs in her birth month's stone. No size to guess, no return conversation, and she'll actually wear them.
