What makes moonstone glow

The effect is adularescence — a soft blue-white light that seems to float just under the surface rather than sit on it. It happens because moonstone is built in microscopic alternating layers of two feldspars, and light scatters as it passes between them. The glow moves as you tilt the stone, which is why moonstone looks alive in person and flat in photographs.

Body colour runs from milky white through peach to grey, and the flash from pale silver to a strong electric blue. Blue flash on a near-transparent body is the most sought-after and the most expensive.

Moonstone and rainbow moonstone

They're sold as the same thing and they aren't quite. Classic moonstone is adularia feldspar with a soft silvery sheen. Rainbow moonstone is technically a white labradorite — more transparent, with sharper blue and occasional multicoloured flashes. Both are genuine, both are lovely, and rainbow tends to be the showier of the two.

Choosing the piece

Cabochons — polished domes rather than faceted cuts — show the glow best. The curved surface gathers light from more angles. This is why most serious moonstone pendants are cabochon rather than cut.

Faceted drops and studs sparkle more and glow less. A trade-off, not a downgrade, and faceted moonstone reads more like conventional jewellery.

Beaded bracelets give flickers rather than one sheet of light, since each bead catches independently. Softer, more everyday.

The one thing to know before buying

Moonstone is soft — 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale — and it has cleavage planes, meaning it can split on a sharp knock rather than just scratching. That makes it a wonderful pendant and a riskier everyday ring. If you want a moonstone ring, choose a bezel setting over prongs and take it off for anything physical.

What it's worn for

New beginnings, intuition, and cycles — moonstone is the stone people reach for mid-transition, when something is shifting and they've decided to trust it before the proof arrives. Tied to the Crown and Third Eye, and long associated with the moon for reasons that are mostly aesthetic and entirely fair.

It pairs naturally with labradorite, which does the same trick in a cooler key, and with clear quartz and rose quartz in a stack.

Care
