What a prayer wheel is

In Tibetan Buddhist practice, a prayer wheel is a cylinder inscribed with mantras — most often om mani padme hum — mounted so it can spin. Turning it is understood as equivalent to reciting the mantra inside. Full-size wheels line the walls of monasteries; hand-held ones are spun while walking.
