What protection jewellery is doing

Protection isn't about hiding. It's about deciding what gets your attention and what absolutely does not. Every culture that has ever made jewellery has made a version of this — something you put on before you walk into the room, so that the deciding is already done.

Practically, that means two things: a symbol with a long history behind it, and a stone dark enough or dense enough to feel like it's actually there. This collection is built from both.

The two symbols

The hamsa is an open palm, held up. It appears across North Africa, the Middle East and South Asia, in Jewish, Islamic and older traditions, and the meaning is remarkably consistent wherever it turns up: a hand raised to say not today. Often with an eye in the centre.

The evil eye is a blue eye that looks back. The idea is that envy travels by looking, so you wear something that returns the look. It is the most widely worn protective symbol on earth, and it is also — usefully — very pretty, which is why it works as everyday jewellery in a way that most talismans don't.

The stones

Black tourmaline is the classic. Opaque, heavy for its size, traditionally the grounding stone people reach for first. Smoky quartz does similar work with more warmth — brown rather than black, and it reads as jewellery rather than as a statement.

Black onyx and black agate give you the same dark weight in a harder, more polished stone, which makes them the sensible pick for rings and anything that takes daily knocks. Hematite is metallic and genuinely dense; you notice it on the wrist. Druzy agate brings the sparkle in — the same dark base, but with a crust of tiny crystals catching light across it.

Common questions

Which is stronger, the hamsa or the evil eye?

They do slightly different jobs. The evil eye returns a look; the hamsa blocks one. Plenty of pieces carry both — an eye set into the palm. Pick the one you'd rather look at every day, because that's the one you'll wear.

Does the evil eye have to be blue?

Traditionally yes, and there's a practical reason: blue glass was the colour associated with the belief across the Mediterranean and Middle East. Other colours have picked up their own meanings since, but blue is the original.

Are these stones genuine?
