Meaningful jewellery gifts for someone having a hard year — owl, hummingbird and lapis lazuli pieces on soft linen

What to Give Someone Having a Hard Year

Somebody messages me every December with a version of the same problem, and it is never the one she thinks it is.

She has a person in mind. Her sister, her best friend, her mother, the woman at work who has quietly held everything together since March. And she has a year in mind — a specific, heavy, unspoken year. Then she opens a shop, and the first thing every shop asks her to do is sort by price.

So she picks a number, and the number has nothing to do with any of it.

This guide is sorted the other way. Not by symbol, not by budget — by what the year did to her. Find the one that matches and the piece is already chosen.

What to give someone having a hard year — five meaningful jewellery gifts sorted by her year, not by price: memorial heart locket, lapis lazuli, owl necklace, owl studs and hummingbird pendant

Start with the sentence, not the shop

Before you open a single tab, finish this sentence about her:

"This year you ______."

This year you left. This year you buried your mother. This year you went back to school at fifty-eight and told almost no one. This year you started over in a city where you know two people.

Whatever comes out is your brief. It's more specific than any category page, and it's the reason the piece will still mean something in five years when the occasion has blurred. You aren't shopping for a birthday. You're shopping for a sentence, and the birthday is just when you get to hand it over.

What follows is organised that way. Find your sentence, then take the piece.

This year you lost someone

This is the gift people get wrong most often, and usually by trying too hard to make it hopeful.

She doesn't need a piece that tells her it gets better. She needs a piece that acknowledges the year happened.

There are two directions here, and they're genuinely different gifts.

If she wants to keep him close

A memorial heart locket is a spinning keepsake that holds a small amount of ashes, a lock of hair, or a pinch of earth from somewhere that mattered.

The keepsake pieces live in Crystals & Paws, which started as the rescue collection and grew into the place I keep everything for loss. The paw designs are for a pet. The plain heart is for anyone — I've sent it for husbands, mothers and one grandmother's ashes split four ways between sisters. A quarter of every sale in that collection goes to animal rescue, which some people like knowing and some people never mention.

Give this one only if you're fairly sure she wants it. Some women want the person physically close and this is the most comforting object they own. Others aren't ready and it lands like a weight. If you're guessing, guess the other direction.

If she needs to be able to talk about it

Lapis lazuli has been used in mourning and burial ornament since the Egyptians, and it's a throat chakra stone — the one tied to saying the unsayable. Grief and a closed throat travel together. A piece that names that is more useful than a piece that tries to lift the mood.

A lapis lazuli piece is what I send most often for this. It's a reminder, not a fix — worn as an intention for finding the words, not as a way around the loss.

One thing about the card, whichever you choose: don't write anything that asks her to be okay. Write the person's name. That's the gift.

This year you stopped being the reasonable one

Same stone, completely different job.

She's the one who has spent thirty years being the calm voice in the room, and something in her has recently decided she's finished with that. Lapis has been the truth-teller's stone for about six thousand years, ground into pigment for the robes of people whose word was supposed to count. Throat chakra again — this time for the sentence she's been rehearsing in the car.

Go for lapis she can see — a bracelet rather than an earring. An earring is for other people. A bracelet is for her, mid-conversation, when she needs one second of nerve. She's still the one who has to say the thing.

This year you rebuilt from the studs

New city. Her own name back. A new apartment where nothing matches and she doesn't care.

The owl belongs here, because starting over mostly happens at night — three in the morning, doing sums, deciding whether the decision was right. She's the oldest symbol we have for watchfulness: the one who sees in the dark, who is awake for the hours nobody else is awake for.

A ring is a statement in a way an earring isn't. For a woman who has recently stopped wearing a different ring, a new one — chosen by someone who loves her, worn on whichever hand she decides — is not a small object. Several women have told me they moved it to the left hand a year later, once it had stopped being a replacement.

If she's more stone than symbol, an owl pendant does the same job in a softer register.

This year you carried something you didn't mention

You know the one. She answers "fine, busy" and changes the subject, and you've known her long enough to hear the gap.

The owl earns a second appearance, in a quieter form. Given as a gift, she says I know you're the one holding it, and I see you. That's a very different message from "cheer up."

Owl studs are the discreet option — small enough for a woman who doesn't want to be asked about her jewellery at work, present enough that she puts a hand to her ear when she remembers why she has them.

If she'd rather have something she can hold, an owl amulet pendant has weight to it. Amulets are meant to be handled. Give her the one she can find through a sweater in a meeting.

Not sure which stone is for the chapter she's in?
The Gemstone Quiz takes 60 seconds and gives you a starting point instead of a price band.

This year you changed and pretended you hadn't

Retirement she didn't choose. The last child gone. A marriage ending politely. A body that has changed the rules without consulting her.

The hummingbird is what I reach for here, because of what she's for rather than what she looks like. A hummingbird can hover, reverse, and hold still in the middle of the air at a speed nothing else manages. That's a fair description of a woman in her fifties reorganising her entire life while still showing up to everything. Not a symbol about being delicate — a symbol about stamina that looks effortless from outside.

The hummingbird pieces have gone to more women mid-change than anything else in the shop, and the note with them is always some version of I know what this year has been. They come in gold and in silver, so you can match what she already wears rather than making her choose.

This year you went through it together

This is the move that gets underrated. One symbol, two pieces, two people going through something together or apart.

A grandmother and a fifteen-year-old granddaughter. Two sisters in two provinces. You and the friend who got you through the divorce. You aren't matching outfits — you're agreeing on a shorthand, and every time either of you puts it on, the other one is in the room.

Pair a hummingbird stud and a hummingbird necklace — the studs are waterproof, which matters more than it sounds: a teenager won't take them out for the pool, the shower or the lake, so they stay on and become hers.

And if the two of you got through it with a dog between you, the matching owner-and-pet sets are the version of this I did not expect to sell as well as they do.

If you want the two to arrive as one gift, the jewellery sets are built for exactly this.

How it arrives

This matters more than usual when the gift is a heavy one. You don't want her opening a padded envelope with a bare pendant in it.

Every order ships in a satin pouch with the piece on its own printed tag — no extra charge, nothing to select. It's ready to hand over exactly as it comes.

If you'd rather it arrive fully wrapped, add the celestial gift box at checkout as a paid upgrade — black with a gold foil sun and moon, velvet inside, ribbon on. Nothing waiting for you at the other end.

Gift messages are free, always. Write it at checkout and I read every one before I pack.

Then say what you meant

A gift chosen this way only works if she knows why you chose it. Otherwise it's a nice necklace, which is a much smaller gift.

You don't need a paragraph. One line does it. This one's an owl. You've been awake for all of it and I noticed. Write it before you wrap it, while you still remember.

Everything here is Canadian-designed, and if you're giving a stone piece rather than a steel one, tuck the crystal care guide in with it. A woman who knows how to look after lapis wears it more often.

If you still don't know

Let her tell you sideways. The Spirit Animal Quiz is the gift-finder route — answer it as her, thinking about the year she's had, and it hands you an animal to shop from instead of a number to guess at. About a minute.

Or browse spirit animal jewellery by animal and see which one you stop on. That one's usually right.

I'm a real person

Still not sure? Send me an email, a text or a message and I'm happy to help. Tell me about her and the year she's had, and I'll tell you what I'd send. There's no algorithm on the other end of that — it's me, at my bench in Calgary, and I've been doing this since 2008.

Questions I get asked

What do you give someone who has had a really hard year?
Something that acknowledges the year rather than trying to brighten it. Choose by what happened to her — grief, starting over, carrying everyone — and let the piece say the thing you can't fit on a card. Then write one specific line about why you chose it.

What do you give someone who is grieving?
Two options work. A memorial heart locket if she wants the person physically close — it holds ashes, hair or earth from a place that mattered. Or a lapis lazuli piece if what she needs is to be able to talk about it. Give the locket only if you're fairly confident she wants one; if you're guessing, give the stone.

Is a memorial keepsake necklace an appropriate gift?
It is when you know her well and know she wants to keep something close. It's not a gift to give tentatively or as a surprise from a distant relationship. It also works for a pet, which is often the easier place to start.

Do you have urn jewellery for people, or only for pets?
Both. The keepsake pieces sit in the Crystals & Paws collection because that's where the collection started, but the plain heart lockets and rings aren't pet-specific — they hold ashes, hair or earth for anyone. The paw designs are the ones made for a pet.

What does owl jewellery mean?
The owl is the long-standing symbol of watchfulness, night vision and protection — worn for the woman who sees what others miss and stays awake for it. It's the piece for someone carrying something she hasn't told you about, or rebuilding at three in the morning.

What does hummingbird jewellery mean?
Stamina disguised as lightness. A hummingbird hovers, reverses and holds steady mid-air, which is what a woman in the middle of a large change looks like from the outside. It's the mid-transition gift.

Is lapis lazuli a good gift for grief?
It has been used in mourning ornament since ancient Egypt, and it's a throat chakra stone — associated with saying what's hard to say. It's worn as an intention for finding words, not as a way around the loss. It's a reminder, not a fix.

Is it strange to give spiritual jewellery to someone who isn't into crystals?
Not if you give the meaning rather than the metaphysics. An owl for the woman holding everything together reads as recognition to anyone, whatever she believes.

Does it arrive ready to give?
Yes. Every order ships in a satin pouch with the piece on its printed tag, at no extra charge. A wrapped celestial gift box is available as a paid upgrade at checkout, and gift messages are always free.

What if I don't know her jewellery style?
Go smaller and go stainless. Studs and short pendants sit inside almost every wardrobe, and stainless steel doesn't react with skin or tarnish in a Canadian winter. Save the statement pieces for someone whose style you already know cold.

xoxo
