What the heart chakra handles
Anahata sits at the centre of the chest and governs connection — compassion, grief, forgiveness, and the business of staying open after something gave you a reason not to be. It's the midpoint of the system, where the physical three below meet the three above.
Out of balance it reads as guardedness, or as giving everything outward and nothing to yourself. Both are heart problems and they often arrive together.
Green and pink, and why there are two
Green is the traditional colour of this centre — growth, expansion, healing outward. Pink is the softer half, and it points inward toward self-compassion. Most people need one considerably more than the other, and it's worth being honest about which.
Rose quartz is the pink one — gentleness toward yourself first. The stone people buy for themselves after a hard year.
Green aventurine is opportunity and new growth — the lighter, more optimistic green.
Malachite is the intense one: deep banded green, associated with transformation and with releasing rather than accumulating. Striking, and heavier in feel than the others.
Emerald is May's birthstone and the formal version — love, patience, and loyalty that shows up on a Tuesday.
Rhodochrosite and rhodonite sit between the two colours, pink with grey or black threading, and are traditionally associated with grief specifically.
Choosing the piece
Pendants suit this centre naturally, since a necklace lands exactly where the chakra sits. A heart-chakra pendant on an 18-inch chain is the most direct version of the intention.
Rose quartz and aventurine are both 7 on the Mohs scale and fine for daily wear. Malachite is 3.5 to 4, soft and porous — a pendant rather than a ring, and never in water.
Pairing
Rose quartz with green aventurine covers both halves of the centre at once, which is the most complete heart stack. Rose quartz with amethyst for when the thing you need to be gentle about is your own overthinking. Rose quartz with hematite for the guarded-but-wanting-not-to-be state, which is more common than people admit.
Care
Rose quartz fades in direct sunlight, permanently — don't store it on a windowsill. Malachite is the one to be careful with: soft, porous, and it should never go in water. Warm water and mild soap for the quartz family, a dry cloth for malachite, no ultrasonic cleaners for anything. More in the crystal care guide.
Either side: Solar Plexus and Throat, or all seven.
Common questions
Green or pink — which do I need?
Pink for compassion toward yourself. Green for growth and opening outward. If you give a lot and receive badly, that's a pink problem, whatever the tradition suggests.
Can malachite get wet?
No. It's soft and porous, and water damages the surface. Wipe it with a dry cloth and keep it out of showers entirely.
Is rose quartz only about romance?
No — that's the February marketing version. The older association is self-compassion, which is why most people buy it for themselves.
Which stone for grief?
Rhodonite and rhodochrosite are the traditional choices. Rose quartz is gentler and more general. There's no wrong answer here.
Where should I wear a heart stone?
A pendant, on an 18-inch chain — it lands where the centre sits. Simplest match of intention and placement in the whole system.
Are the stones genuine?
Every listing says which it is. Dyed green quartz sold as aventurine is common elsewhere — anything treated is labelled here.
