What amethyst is

Quartz with iron in it, irradiated over geological time until it turns purple. That's the whole mechanism. The colour runs from a pale lilac barely there in daylight to a deep royal that reads almost black under lamplight, and the depth is what drives the price — not size.

Purple has meant composure for a very long time. It was the colour restricted to royalty because the dye was ruinously expensive, and amethyst carried the same association centuries before anyone had a word for branding.

Mined, lab-grown and hydro — and why we carry all three

Some of what's here came out of the ground. Some was grown in controlled conditions, which produces real quartz with real colour, just faster and more consistently. Some is hydro quartz, colour-treated on purpose to hit a specific shade.

None of these is a fake. They're different processes with different price points, and every single listing states plainly which one you're getting. I'd rather tell you than let you assume — that's the whole policy, on every stone in the shop.

Choosing the piece

Pendants put one stone at the collarbone. A bezel-set or teardrop amethyst is the most-worn option — it reads as jewellery to anyone who isn't looking for a crystal.

Drop earrings in faceted amethyst or amethyst glass throw purple when they move. Marquise and teardrop cuts catch the most light.

Beaded bracelets give you the stone all the way round, and stack well with clear quartz or moonstone.

Rings — cushion cuts and mother-of-pearl pairings. Amethyst sits at 7 on the Mohs scale, hard enough for daily wear but it will scratch against harder stones, so don't store it loose with quartz and topaz.

Metal pairing

Sterling silver keeps amethyst cool and reads more restrained. Gold plate warms the purple considerably and pulls it toward wine rather than lilac. Deep amethyst with gold is the dressier combination; pale amethyst with silver is the everyday one.

Chakra and intention

Amethyst governs both the Third Eye and the Crown — intuition and clarity, the two that sit above the noise. It's traditionally worn for sleep, for calm, and for the specific problem of replaying a conversation from three days ago at 2am. Worn as a reminder, not a treatment.

Care, and the one warning

Amethyst fades in sunlight. Not quickly, but permanently — a piece left on a sunny windowsill for months will lose depth and never get it back. Store it out of direct light. Warm water and mild soap, no ultrasonic cleaners. Full detail in the crystal care guide.
