What gives tiger's eye its shift

The effect is called chatoyancy — a band of light that moves across the surface as you turn the stone, like the pupil of a cat's eye. It comes from parallel fibres inside the stone reflecting light in one direction at a time. Which is why a piece can look flat in a photograph and completely alive on your wrist.

The colour runs golden brown through honey to a deeper coffee, banded rather than uniform. Blue-grey hawk's eye and red tiger's eye are the same stone at different stages of oxidation.

Every piece here is genuine

No dyed substitutes, no glass imitations. Tiger's eye is one of the more commonly faked stones because the banding is easy to print onto resin — the tell is that fakes have perfectly regular stripes and no movement in the light. Real tiger's eye shifts. Ours does.

Choosing the piece

Oval studs are the quiet version. Warm brown reads as neutral against almost everything, and nobody at work will identify it as a crystal.

Drops and pendants show the chatoyancy best, because they move. A polished cabochon catches more of the shift than a faceted cut — with this stone, the curve matters more than the facets.

Beaded bracelets give you the banding all the way round and are built to stack. Tiger's eye anchors a stack of paler stones without fighting them.

Metal pairing

Gold plate is the natural match — it picks up the honey tones and makes the whole thing read warmer and richer. Sterling silver cools it and pulls out the grey and coffee bands instead, which is the more restrained look. Both work; gold is the more common instinct.

Chakra and what it's for

Solar Plexus by chakra — confidence, drive, the part of you that decides things. Root by temperament, because it steadies you before it pushes. That combination is why it's the stone people reach for ahead of a specific event: the meeting, the ask, the conversation you've already had four times in the shower.

It pairs well with citrine for straightforward confidence, with smoky quartz for grounding, and with clear quartz when you want the whole stack sharper.

Care

Tiger's eye sits around 7 on the Mohs scale and handles daily wear well. It doesn't love prolonged water — the fibrous structure can dull — so take it off for the shower and the pool. Warm water, mild soap, dry properly. No ultrasonic cleaners. More in the crystal care guide.

Questions people actually ask

Is your tiger's eye genuine?

Every piece here is genuine natural tiger's eye. No dyed resin, no printed banding. If a stone doesn't shift in the light, it isn't real — ours shifts.

Why does it look different in photos?

Because the effect depends on angle. A still photograph catches one position; the stone lives in movement. It will look better in your hand than on your screen.

What chakra is tiger's eye?

Solar Plexus mainly — confidence and drive. It also carries root-chakra grounding, which is why it steadies before it pushes.

Can I wear it in water?

Short contact is fine, prolonged is not. The fibrous structure dulls with repeated soaking, so take it off for showers, pools and hot tubs.

Gold or silver setting?

Gold plate warms the honey tones and is the more popular pick. Silver cools it and brings out the grey bands. Match whichever metal you already wear.

What does tiger's eye pair with?

Citrine for confidence, smoky quartz for grounding, clear quartz to sharpen a whole stack. It's a good anchor stone against paler beads.
