What labradorite actually is

A feldspar, and a fairly plain one until light hits it at the right angle. Then the whole stone goes blue, or green, or the occasional flash of gold. That effect has its own name — labradorescence — and it comes from layers inside the stone splitting light as it passes through. Which is a long way of saying: the colour is not on the surface. It is structural. It does not rub off, fade, or wear away.

This is also why no two pieces look the same, and why one that looked spectacular in the photo can look quiet on your wrist until you turn toward a window. That is the stone doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

Choosing between the cuts

Faceted and polished cabochons give you the strongest flash. The curved surface catches light from more angles, so the colour shifts as you move. Best in a pendant, where it sits still enough to be looked at.

Round beads — the bracelets — read greyer overall. You get flickers rather than one big sheet of blue, because each bead catches light independently. Softer, more everyday, less of a statement.

Faceted drops and studs land in between. Enough surface for the flash, small enough to wear to work without anyone commenting.

Metal and setting

Sterling silver is the traditional pairing and it is traditional for a reason — the cool tone sits with the blue rather than competing with it. Gold-plated settings push the stone warmer and pull out the green and gold flashes instead. Neither is more correct. If you already wear mostly one metal, match it; a labradorite piece you actually put on beats a perfect one in a drawer.

Labradorite sits around 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, which is softer than quartz. It also has cleavage planes, meaning it can chip on a hard knock. Bezel settings protect the edges better than prong settings. Worth knowing before you pick a ring you plan to wear while gardening.

Who it suits

Labradorite is the stone people reach for mid-transition. Between jobs, between cities, between the version of yourself you were and the one you have not met yet. It is associated with intuition and the third eye, and it turns up constantly in the middle of a move.

It is also, practically speaking, a good first coloured stone. Grey enough to go with everything, interesting enough that you keep noticing it. If someone is nervous about wearing crystals visibly, this is the one that reads as jewellery first.

What to pair it with
