What the third eye represents

The third eye — ajna in Sanskrit — sits between and slightly above the brows. It's the sixth chakra, and it's associated with intuition, perception and the difference between looking at something and actually seeing it. In imagery it's rendered as an open eye, sometimes lashed, sometimes rayed, sometimes inside a triangle or a lotus.

The everyday version of this is unglamorous and real: it's the moment you know something is off before you can explain why. Most people have had it. The symbol is a reminder to take that signal seriously instead of talking yourself out of it.

Third eye or evil eye — they're different

Worth clearing up, because they get conflated constantly. The evil eye is protective — it faces outward and deflects. The third eye faces inward and is about perception. One is a shield, the other is a lens. Plenty of people wear both, and pieces exist that combine them.

The stones that go with it

  • Amethyst — the classic third eye stone. Purple, widely available, and genuinely durable at 7 on Mohs.
  • Lapis lazuli — deep blue with pyrite flecking. Softer, around 5, so it wants a gentler life.
  • Labradorite — grey until the light hits it, then it flashes blue and gold. The stone most associated with seeing what's hidden.
  • Sodalite — blue and white, more affordable, and easily mistaken for lapis.

If you want the stone rather than the symbol, amethyst jewelry is the place to start.

What you're buying

Sterling silver or gold plate over base metal, specified on every listing. Stones are genuine unless the listing states dyed, treated or lab-grown — and we do state it. Dyed sodalite and dyed howlite sold as lapis are common in this category across the internet; ours are labelled honestly, including where the honest label is less impressive.

Amethyst fades in prolonged direct sun. Not quickly, but it does — a summer on a sunny windowsill will lighten it. Keep it out of the window and it stays. Our crystal care guide covers the rest.

Common questions

What's the difference between the third eye and the evil eye?

The third eye is about intuition and looks inward. The evil eye is protective and faces outward. Different symbols, frequently confused, often worn together.

Which stone is best for third eye jewelry?

Amethyst is the traditional pick and the most durable. Lapis and labradorite are the other two most common, and labradorite is the one with the visual drama.

Where should I wear it?

A pendant sitting near the sternum is the usual choice. There's no positioning rule — the symbol isn't required to sit anywhere near your forehead.

Will amethyst fade?

In sustained direct sunlight, yes, slowly. Normal wear is fine. Don't store it on a windowsill, which is unfortunately where a lot of people put crystals.

Is lapis lazuli in these pieces genuine?

Where a listing says lapis, it's lapis. Dyed sodalite and dyed howlite are widely sold as lapis elsewhere; if a piece of ours uses either, the listing names it correctly.

Can I wear this with my chakra pieces?

Yes — it's the same sixth chakra. Our third eye chakra collection gathers everything that works to that point.
