What rose quartz actually is

Quartz with trace minerals — usually titanium or manganese — that turn it pink. The colour is almost always soft and cloudy rather than vivid; genuinely transparent rose quartz is rare and priced accordingly. If you see a piece that's intensely, evenly hot pink and cheap, it has been dyed.

Ours is genuine, which means the pink is gentle and varies between pieces. That variation is the stone being real, not the stone being inconsistent.

It isn't really about romance

Rose quartz gets sold as a love stone every February, which undersells it. The tradition is broader than that: self-compassion, gentleness toward yourself, and the specific business of letting people back in after you've had reason not to.

That's why it's the stone people buy for themselves after a hard year, and why it works as a gift for a friend going through something — in a way that reads as care rather than as a comment on their love life.

Choosing the piece

Pendants sit at the heart, which is where the stone is traditionally worn and also just where a necklace lands. Polished cabochons show the soft cloudiness best.

Beaded bracelets are the most-worn version — pale pink is neutral enough to go with anything, and it softens a stack of darker stones. Rose quartz with hematite or smoky quartz is a good balance of gentle and grounded.

Studs and drops read as pink jewellery first and crystal second, which suits people who'd rather not announce it.

Metal pairing

Sterling silver keeps rose quartz cool and modern. Gold plate warms it toward blush and is the dressier read. Rose gold is the obvious pairing and slightly the obvious one — lovely, but it can flatten the stone's own colour by matching it too closely.

Care, and the fading warning

Rose quartz fades in direct sunlight, permanently. This is the single most common way people ruin it — a bracelet left on a sunny sill for a summer comes back grey-white. Store it out of the light.
