In 2022 I was still piecing my life back together after 2020 turned it upside down. My marriage had ended, suddenly. COVID had flattened the business I had spent twelve years building. And every year I was going in for radiofrequency ablations on my lower back, a procedure where they burn off the nerves that carry the pain. Then you go home, lie very still, and wait to find out whether it worked this time.
I was recovering from one of those when my coach announced she was running a retreat in Canmore. I was in no place to be travelling. I knew I needed to go anyway. Not wanted to. Needed to. So my friend Heather and I loaded the car and drove out to the mountains.
While everyone else set off on the silent walk, I stayed behind, because my back had the final say on hiking that week. I stretched out by the river and did something I had not done in a very long time: I just existed.
That is when a dragonfly landed on me.
Then it lifted off, circled, and landed again. And a third time. I lay very still and looked at her. Her wings were tattered, frayed at the edges, clearly not new. She was persistent and dazzling anyway, catching the light, just doing her thing.
It felt like a cosmic wink. Even a little battered, you can still shine and still move forward.
I had called the dragonfly my animal for years before that afternoon. Canmore was the day it stopped being a nice idea and started being an instruction. I will be honest about the rest of the story too: the dragonfly carried me through that chapter, and then a different chapter asked for a different animal. When what I needed stopped being lightness and started being boundaries, the snake took over. That is how this works. What the dragonfly means as a spirit animal
Light after a heavy stretch. Dragonfly wings are built to catch light, and in the sun they shimmer in colours the body underneath does not have. The meaning follows: the brightness is real even when what is carrying it has been through a lot.
Adaptability without losing your shape. A dragonfly can move up, down, forward, backward and side to side, and change direction in an instant, all without turning its body. That is the kind of adaptability worth wanting. Not bending until you are unrecognisable. Changing course and staying yourself.
The threshold between two worlds. It starts life in water and finishes it in air. Few animals make a more complete crossing, which is why the dragonfly turns up at thresholds: a move, a new decade, the year after something ended.
Making the light part count. Adult dragonflies live weeks to a few months. Most of the life happens out of sight. The flying part is short, bright, and entirely the point.
Most of its life happens underwater
This is the part that gets left out of the pretty version, and it is the part I would underline.
A dragonfly spends most of its life as a nymph, living underwater for months and in some species several years. It is a fierce little hunter down there, breathing through gills, growing, shedding its skin again and again as it outgrows each one. Nobody looking at the pond has any idea it is there.
Then one day it climbs up a reed and out of the water. Its back splits open. It pulls itself out of its old skin, pumps fluid into crumpled wings until they straighten, and waits for them to dry and harden before it can fly. The empty shell stays clinging to the reed, a perfect copy of who it was underwater.
So when the dragonfly arrives in your life, it is not telling you to lighten up. It is telling you that the long stretch out of sight counted. The years at the bottom of the pond were not wasted time. They were the part where the wings got built.
A few more things it does that are frankly showing off:
- It is ancient. Dragonflies and their relatives have been flying for around 300 million years. Some early ones had wingspans close to 70 centimetres.
- It sees almost everything. Huge compound eyes give it close to all-round vision, built for catching the slightest movement.
- Each wing works on its own. Four wings, each moved independently, which is how it hovers, reverses and turns on the spot.
- It rarely misses. Studies of hunting dragonflies have recorded catch rates as high as 95 percent, among the best of any predator.
The dragonfly across cultures
Japan: the victory insect
One old poetic name for Japan is Akitsushima, often read as "the islands of the dragonfly." Samurai called it kachimushi, the victory insect, and wore it on armour and helmets because a dragonfly was said never to retreat. Which is charming, given that it flies backwards perfectly well. It simply chooses not to.
Europe: the devil's darning needle
Medieval Europe was less impressed. Long, fast and needle-shaped, the dragonfly picked up names like the devil's darning needle, and old folklore warned children it would sew their lips shut if they told lies. Modern readings are considerably kinder: light, change, and a creature that earned its wings.
The American Southwest: a sign of water
In parts of the Southwest, dragonflies painted on Pueblo pottery have long been read as signs of water, which makes sense for an animal that spends most of its life in it. There is no single Indigenous belief about the dragonfly; there are many nations with their own traditions, and this is one, named where it belongs.
A note, because it matters: "spirit animal" is modern shorthand, borrowed loosely from several Indigenous traditions where the real concepts are ceremonial and specific. I use the phrase because it is what people search for. What I am describing is an animal symbol you choose to carry, not a claim on anyone's ceremony.
