The snake spirit animal means shedding: leaving behind something you have outgrown, on purpose, and not going back for it. It is not the butterfly's kind of transformation. The snake does not turn into something else. It becomes more itself, minus the layer that stopped fitting. Below is what that looks like in a real life, why the week before the shed is the hardest part, and the ten-minute fall ritual I use when I know exactly what I am done with and have not said so out loud.
For about fifteen years I would have told you my animal was the dragonfly, and I had a good story ready about why. Then I hit a stretch where transformation was not the problem. I had done plenty of transforming. What I needed was to stop saying yes to everyone, and the dragonfly had nothing to say about that.
The snake did.
Around the same time, a snake started turning up on a trail on Salt Spring Island. A friend showed me that trail in 2020, a First Nations trail through some of the most beautiful ground I know, and there was a snake on it. The next summer, same trail, same snake waiting. The summer after that. Five years running. One year I brought Shannon, who does not care for snakes and would like that on the record.
I took it as a nice coincidence for about four of those five years. That is the thing about the snake. It will keep showing up for as long as it takes.
How the five summers ended. The whole story is in what it means when the owl finds you.
What the snake means as a spirit animal
Four things, and they all belong to the same woman.
Shedding. The headline meaning, and the most misread. Shedding is not loss. A snake sheds because it has grown and the old skin is now too small. If you are leaving a job, a friendship, a role in the family or a version of the story you have told about yourself for thirty years, the snake's reading is simple: you did not fail it. You outgrew it.
Boundaries. The snake leaves the old skin where it fell. It does not drag it along to see whether it might fit again next year. For a woman who has been the reliable one for decades, that is the hard lesson: leaving something behind means not going back for it, not explaining yourself to it, and not apologising to it.
Instinct. A snake reads the world through its tongue, collecting scent from the air and passing it to an organ in the roof of its mouth. It knows what is in the room before anything has moved. You probably do too, and you have probably been talked out of it more than once.
Patience. The snake does not hurry. It waits, it warms itself, it moves when it is ready. Nobody has ever rushed a snake into anything and enjoyed the result.
Put together, the snake is the spirit animal of the woman who knows what she has outgrown and is ready to stop carrying it.
The week the snake can't see
This is the part nobody puts on the greeting card, and it is the part I find most useful.
A few days before a shed, fluid builds up between the old skin and the new one underneath. Snakes have no eyelids. Each eye is covered by a clear scale, and that scale goes cloudy and milky blue. Keepers call it being "in blue." For the better part of a week the snake can barely see. It hides, it often stops eating, and it gets defensive with anything that comes near.
Then the eyes clear, and a day or two later it rubs its nose against something rough, a rock or a branch, until the old skin splits at the lips. It crawls forward and out, and the old skin peels back inside out, often in one piece, like a sock pulled off by the toe. What it leaves behind is a perfect, empty copy of who it was last month.
So when you are in the cloudy part, irritable, unable to see the shape of what is next, wanting everyone to leave you alone: that is not the process failing. That is the process. The snake does not get to skip the blue week, and neither do you. It does pass.
The snake across cultures
Few symbols are older, and almost every culture that lived alongside snakes gave them a job.
Egypt: the cobra on the crown
The uraeus, a rearing cobra, sat on the front of the pharaoh's crown as a sign of protection and royal authority, tied to the cobra goddess Wadjet. The snake on the forehead was the guard who never slept.
The ouroboros: the snake eating its own tail
One of the earliest known images of a snake swallowing its own tail appears on a shrine from the tomb of Tutankhamun. Greek alchemists later took it up as the emblem of cycles: an ending that feeds a beginning, over and over. It is the clearest picture there is of the snake's message. Nothing is wasted, including the parts of your life you are finished with.
India: the coil at the base of the spine
In yogic tradition, kundalini is pictured as a serpent coiled at the base of the spine, resting at the root chakra. That is why snake symbolism and the root chakra keep turning up together, and why grounding stones suit a snake piece so well. The snake is not up in the clouds. It lives close to the ground, and so does the work it represents.
China: wisdom that keeps its own counsel
In the Chinese zodiac the snake stands for wisdom, intuition and a certain composure, the one at the table who has worked out the whole situation and is in no hurry to announce it. The most recent Year of the Snake ran through February 2026.
A note, because it matters: "spirit animal" is modern shorthand, borrowed loosely from several Indigenous traditions where the real concepts are ceremonial and specific. I use the phrase because it is what people search for. What I am describing is an animal symbol you choose to carry, not a claim on anyone's ceremony.
Signs the snake is your spirit animal
- You know exactly what you have outgrown. You just have not said it out loud yet.
- People have told you that you have changed, and they did not quite mean it as a compliment.
- You are better at endings than you get credit for. Quieter about them, too.
- You read a room before anyone has spoken, and you are usually right.
- You have been in a cloudy, prickly stretch lately and wanted to be left alone in it.
- Snakes keep turning up: on walks, in dreams, on a piece of jewellery you keep going back to look at.
If three of those landed, the snake has probably been waiting on the trail for a while.
Snake, butterfly or dragonfly?
All three get filed under transformation, and they are not the same job. The butterfly dissolves and rebuilds: total change, from the inside out. The dragonfly is the lighter touch, adapting fast without losing its shape. The snake sheds. It stays recognisably itself and leaves the old layer behind on purpose. If you are not dissolving and you are not floating, you are probably shedding. Every animal and what it is for sits together in the spirit animal jewelry guide.

A fall ritual for shedding what's done
Autumn does this in public. The trees drop everything they spent the summer growing and nobody calls them dramatic. That makes it the easiest season of the year to let something go, because the whole landscape is doing it with you.
This takes about ten minutes. You need a piece of paper, a pen, and your snake piece if you have one.
- Ask the question. Sit somewhere quiet and ask yourself: what old skin am I ready to shed this fall? Not what you should shed. What you are ready to. The answer usually arrives faster than you expect, and it is usually the one you were hoping not to hear.
- Write it in one line. One sentence, present tense. I am done being the one who always says yes. I am not going back to that job. That friendship has run its course. No explanation. The snake does not write an explanation.
- Get low. Feet flat on the floor, or better, on the ground outside. Hold a grounding stone if you have one, or rest a hand low on your belly, near the root. This is the snake's territory: close to the earth, steady, unhurried.
- Leave it behind. Tear the paper up and drop it in the leaf pile, the compost or the recycling. Not the drawer. A drawer is where you keep things you plan to go back for.
- Put the piece on tomorrow. The ritual is not the evening. It is the next day, when the old habit comes knocking. A snake ring on your hand is the reminder you will see at exactly that moment.
Two lines to say while you do it, or to write on the inside of the notebook:
- I am happy with all parts of who I am becoming.
- I can leave this where it fell.
And three questions for the journal, if the ritual stirs up more than one line's worth:
- What change have I been resisting, and what is it trying to make room for?
- Who am I still explaining myself to, and do they need the explanation?
- What cycle in my life is asking to end, and what is ready to start once it does?

Snake jewelry worth wearing
Snake jewellery has had a long run as a fashion piece, which is fine. Worn on purpose, it does a more specific job: it is the reminder that you already decided. Everything below lives together in the snake jewelry collection, and every piece is a reminder, not a fix.
The everyday pair
The Snake Earrings Sterling Silver Huggies sit close to the lobe with the snake wrapped around the hoop. Small enough that nobody comments, which is usually the pair you end up wearing every day.
The one that coils
The Crystal Snake Bracelet is an adjustable wrap, the snake curling around the wrist the way it would around a branch. It also counts toward the Stack of 3 bracelet offer if you are building a stack.
The one you see all day
A necklace faces outward. A ring faces you. The Crystal Snake Ring is adjustable and wraps the finger, and it sits in your eyeline every time your hands are on the wheel or the keyboard. It is the piece I would choose for the ritual above.
The statement earrings
The Snake Earrings come in green hydro quartz, pink cat's eye or black onyx, set in gold-plated sterling silver. The green is the one that stops people. The black onyx is the one for the woman who would rather it did not.
At the collarbone
Three snake pendants, each a slightly different temperament. The Snake Crystal Necklace comes in gold or silver with red crystal eyes. The Snake Necklace with Blue Eye and the Crystal Snake Necklace are gold-plated stainless steel, smaller, and easy to layer.
The stones that sit well beside a snake
Three, and they map to different parts of the shed.
- Malachite: banded green, the classic stone for change. Worn as an intention for letting the old layer go.
- Labradorite: grey until the light hits it, then flashing blue and gold. For the blue week, when you cannot see yet but something is about to show.
- Garnet: deep red and grounding, a root stone. For staying steady while the rest of your life rearranges itself.
None of them do the work. You do the work. The stone is the reminder you put on before you do it. One practical note: malachite and labradorite both belong on the no-water list, so check which crystals can't get wet before you rinse anything.

Snake spirit animal FAQ
What does the snake mean as a spirit animal?
Shedding: leaving behind something you have outgrown, on purpose, and not going back for it. It also stands for boundaries, instinct and patience. Unlike the butterfly, the snake does not become something else. It becomes more itself, minus the layer that stopped fitting.
What does it mean when a snake keeps crossing your path?
The traditional reading is that something in your life has become too small for you and you already know what it is. Repetition is the signal. The snake tends to keep showing up until the thing gets named.
Is the snake a good or bad spirit animal?
Good, and badly misunderstood. Across Egypt, India, China and Greek alchemy the snake stands for protection, renewal, wisdom and cycles. The discomfort people feel around snakes is part of the meaning: shedding is uncomfortable, and it is still growth.
What chakra is the snake connected to?
The root chakra. In yogic tradition, kundalini is pictured as a serpent coiled at the base of the spine. That is why grounding stones such as garnet and smoky quartz pair naturally with snake jewellery.
What does snake jewelry symbolize?
Transformation, rebirth and protection. Worn on purpose, a snake piece is a reminder that you have decided to leave something behind. It suits anyone at a threshold: a retirement, a move, a divorce, the end of a role you have carried for years.
What is the difference between snake and dragonfly symbolism?
The snake sheds: it stays itself and leaves the old layer behind. The dragonfly adapts: it changes direction fast without losing its shape, and it carries light after a heavy stretch. Read the dragonfly guide →
