June is the month of graduations, weddings and somebody's open house, and you'll be standing at all three in the same good shoes. It's a month of other people's thresholds. Pearl and moonstone are both stones that glow rather than sparkle, which suits a month where everyone else is the main event.

What Is the Birthstone for June?
Pearl, moonstone and alexandrite. Pearl is the traditional one, moonstone was added for the older lists, and alexandrite arrived on the modern list as the rare one.

What Colour Is the June Birthstone?
Mostly white, with a glow. Pearl runs from white and cream to blush, champagne and the dark "peacock" tones. Moonstone is milky with a blue or white sheen that moves as you do; rainbow moonstone flashes blue and violet. Alexandrite is the odd one out: green in daylight and red-purple under lamplight.
Why One Pearl Costs More Than Another
Almost every pearl sold today is cultured: a real pearl, grown by a real mollusc, with a farmer starting the process. Natural pearls, found by chance, are rare and priced for collectors. Saltwater pearls (Akoya, South Sea) cost more than freshwater, and perfectly round costs more than baroque or "potato" shapes. Lustre, the mirror-like glow, matters most of all.
Freshwater and potato pearls are genuine pearls at an honest price. Mother of pearl is the shell's own lustrous lining. Faux pearl is glass or shell coated to look like pearl. It's pretty, even and inexpensive, and it isn't pearl. All of these are fine to buy. The only bad buy is a label that doesn't say which one it is.
Moonstone follows the same rule: grade, not authenticity. A clear stone with a strong blue sheen costs far more than a milky one, and both are real. One honest footnote: "rainbow moonstone" is, mineral-wise, a close cousin of labradorite. It's sold as moonstone everywhere, mine included, and I'd rather you heard it from me.
Pearl: Wisdom from the Deep
Unlike mined stones, pearls are formed organically, layer by layer, which makes them a fair teacher of patience, surrender and resilience.

Moonstone: The Threshold Stone
Mystical and luminous, moonstone has long been connected to the divine feminine. It's worn for intuition, creativity and emotional flow.

Alexandrite: The Stone That Changes Its Mind
Alexandrite is June's third official birthstone, and the one almost nobody owns, for a very good reason.
It's a colour-change variety of chrysoberyl, discovered in Russia's Ural Mountains in the 1830s and named for Tsar Alexander II. In daylight it reads green. Under warm indoor light it shifts to red-purple. The old description is "emerald by day, ruby by night," and unlike most gem folklore, that one is true.
Alexandrite Meaning:
- Transformation — the stone for becoming something else
- Adaptability without losing yourself
- Holding two truths at once
The honest part: natural alexandrite is one of the most expensive gemstones on earth, and the finest stones can outprice diamond per carat. The Russian deposits were largely exhausted within decades of discovery. If you see affordable alexandrite, it is almost certainly lab-created, and there is nothing wrong with that: lab-grown alexandrite is chemically the same material with the same colour change, honestly made and honestly priced. What matters is that the seller tells you which one you're holding.
I don't currently make alexandrite pieces. If the colour-change idea is what draws you, moonstone's shifting sheen scratches a similar itch at a price that isn't absurd.
A Note on Pink Tourmaline
You'll sometimes see pink tourmaline listed as a June stone. It isn't. Tourmaline is October's birthstone, alongside opal. I'd rather tell you that than let a pretty pink stone sit in the wrong month.
That said, it shows up in June pieces for a legitimate reason: it pairs beautifully with pearl, and a pearl-and-tourmaline piece belongs to both months.
