Choose Your Pearl
- 5 mm Potato — the smallest, and the roundest of the two 5 mm strands. Soft, even, understated.
- 5 mm Button — same size, flatter profile. Sits close to the wrist and catches light across the face of each pearl rather than around it.
- 6–7 mm Potato — the middle weight. Gently oval, a little irregular bead to bead.
- 7–8 mm Potato — the most presence. Still potato-shaped, just larger about it.
A Word From Andrea, On Potato Pearls
I've been buying potato pearls for years, on purpose. "Potato" is the real trade word for a pearl that's slightly oval and a bit lumpy — and most freshwater pearls are. A button pearl is the same idea, flattened on one side.
Neither is a defect. In a world that runs on fast and identical, a pearl grew slowly inside something alive, and it came out looking like itself. Some people would call that not good enough. I think it makes them more precious, not less. A strand of perfect matching spheres is almost always plastic.
