Hunter's Moon 2026 guide - full moon meaning, ritual and crystals from Mystic Soul Jewelry

Hunter's Moon 2026: Date, Meaning + Ritual Guide

The Harvest Moon gets the poetry. The Hunter's Moon gets the work.

It rises on Sunday, October 25, 2026, peaking at 10:12 p.m. here in Calgary — 12:12 a.m. Eastern on the 26th, which is why you'll see it listed under both dates depending on where the site is written. Either night is the night. It comes up low and gold over the eastern horizon not long after sunset, hangs there looking twice its actual size, and does not care that you have work in the morning.

I've been designing under this moon for eighteen years and I still go outside for it.

Hunter's Moon October 2026 ritual in four steps - go outside, count the pantry, cull one thing, name what you're hunting

Why It's Called the Hunter's Moon

The name is agricultural before it's mystical, which I love. The Harvest Moon is the full moon closest to the September equinox — the one that let farmers keep bringing in crops after dark. The Hunter's Moon is the very next one, and by then the fields are cleared. Bare ground. Fallen leaves. Animals fat from summer and suddenly very easy to see against nothing.

Both moons share the same orbital trick: they rise only about twenty-five to thirty minutes later each night instead of the usual fifty. So you get several evenings in a row of early, generous moonlight. For a hunting culture heading into a northern winter, that was not romance. That was survival math.

The earliest written use of the name that anyone can point to is from 1710, which is more recent than most people assume.

In northern Europe it also went by Blood Moon or Sanguine Moon — the slaughter month, when herds were culled and stores were laid in. Nothing to do with eclipses. That's a modern borrowing, and if you want the eclipse version I wrote about it separately in the blood moon rituals and total lunar eclipse guide.

So: Harvest is gathering. Hunter is what you do once the gathering is done and you can finally see the shape of what you've got.

Taurus Moon, Scorpio Sun

The 2026 Hunter's Moon sits in Taurus while the Sun moves through Scorpio. That's an axis, not a coincidence — full moons always land opposite the Sun, and this one pulls the two signs most concerned with resources into a staring contest.

Taurus is what's yours. Your earnings, your body, your comfort, the slow steady things you built by hand. Scorpio is what's shared — joint money, joint history, the conversations that happen after the door closes.

Put plainly: Taurus wants the good sheets and the full pantry. Scorpio wants to know who else is at the table and whether the arrangement is honest.

You don't have to be an astrologer to feel that. Late October is when the budget gets real, when you notice what you're carrying for other people, when a thing you've been not-saying starts pressing on your throat. The Hunter's Moon lights all of it. That's the whole gift and also the whole problem.

The Hunter's Moon Question

Every full moon gets handed the same script — release, let go, cleanse, repeat. I've written some of that script myself. But this one has a sharper, more useful question, and it comes straight out of the folklore:

What have I actually got, and will it get me through the winter?

Not what do you want. Not what are you calling in. What is genuinely in the pantry — money, energy, time, patience, people who show up. The hunters didn't go out under this moon to dream. They went out because they'd counted what was on the shelf and knew it wasn't enough yet.

That's a much less flattering question than most full moon prompts. It's also the one that changes anything.

Journal, pen and candle set out for a Hunter's Moon ritual

A Hunter's Moon Ritual That Takes Twenty Minutes

No smoke required. No specific hour. You can do this any evening between October 23 and October 29, while the moon is still riding high and bright.

1. Go outside first

Before the journal, before the stone, before anything. Stand where you can see the eastern sky about an hour after sunset. This moon rises low and looks enormous — that's an optical trick your brain plays when there's a rooftop or a tree line for scale, and knowing it's a trick does not make it less beautiful. Stay out there until you're a little cold. That's the ritual. The rest is bookkeeping.

2. Count the pantry

Three columns, one page. Have. Need. Carrying for someone else.

Be unromantic about it. "Have" includes the boring wins — the debt that's smaller than last year, the friend who answers on the first ring, the fact that you can now say no without a paragraph of explanation. "Carrying for someone else" is the Scorpio column, and it's usually the one people write fastest and like least.

3. Pick one thing to cull

One. Not a purge, not a whole new life. The Hunter's Moon is a culling moon, and culling is precise by definition. One commitment, one expense, one story you tell about yourself that stopped being true around 2019.

4. Name what you're hunting

Write the specific thing you're going after between now and the solstice. Specific. "More peace" is not a target. "Sunday mornings with nothing on the calendar" is a target.

5. Put on the reminder

Whatever you're wearing tomorrow — bracelet, earrings, a ring you don't take off — hold it while you read your target out loud once. That's it. You're not charging it. You're giving yourself something to touch on Wednesday when you've forgotten the whole thing.

Stones for the Hunter's Moon

These are companions, not fixes. Nobody's stone did the culling for them. But a reminder you can feel on your wrist at 2 p.m. beats a note in your phone you'll never reopen, and that's the entire honest case for wearing an intention.

For this moon I go grounded and gold — Taurus earth, Scorpio depth, October light.

Six stones for the Hunter's Moon - smoky quartz, labradorite, moonstone, garnet, tiger's eye and black tourmaline

Smoky Quartz — for the counting

Root chakra, and my default when the task is looking at something clearly instead of flinching from it. This is the stone for the three-column page. The Smoky Quartz Root Chakra Bracelet is the everyday version; the Smoky Quartz Stud Earrings are for when you want it on and invisible.

Labradorite — for the thing you can see now that the field is bare

Third eye. Grey until it isn't, and then it's blue-green fire from one angle only — which is a fairly on-the-nose metaphor for late October. The Labradorite Double Teardrop Necklace and the Labradorite Faceted Bracelet are the two I reach for most.

Moonstone — for the moon itself

If you only want one piece that belongs to this night, make it moonstone. The Faceted Rainbow Moonstone Bracelet catches light the way the moon does; the Moonstone Sterling Silver Pendant is the quieter one.

Garnet — for Scorpio season

Deep red, unfussy, and the stone I hand people who need to have the conversation rather than think about having it. The Luxe Garnet Gemstone Bracelet stacks with everything.

Tiger's Eye and Carnelian — for the hunt part

Solar plexus and sacral. Confidence and momentum, for the week after the moon when the target you named starts requiring actual behavior. Tiger's Eye Drop Earrings, Carnelian Sacral Chakra Bracelet.

Black Tourmaline — for the column you didn't like writing

Grounding and protection, and my pick for anyone whose "carrying for someone else" list ran long. The Black Tourmaline Root Chakra Bracelet is the one.

All of them live in the gemstone collection if you'd rather browse than be told.

If You'd Rather Wear the Moon Than a Stone

Some people want the symbol, not the mineral. Fair. The Moon Phase Necklace with its iridescent shell pendant is the piece I wear most in October, and the Celestial Moon Ring is the one people ask about at shows. The Celestial Moon Earrings are waterproof, which matters more than it sounds like it should.

The rest of it is in the celestial collection.

The Full Lunar Cycle Around the Hunter's Moon

If you like to work the whole cycle rather than just the full moon, here are the four turning points. Times are from NASA's data, given in Mountain Time for those of us in Calgary and Eastern Time for everyone else.

Phase Mountain Time Eastern Time
New Moon Sat, Oct 10, 9:50 a.m. Sat, Oct 10, 11:50 a.m.
First Quarter Sun, Oct 18, 10:13 a.m. Sun, Oct 18, 12:13 p.m.
Full Hunter's Moon Sun, Oct 25, 10:12 p.m. Mon, Oct 26, 12:12 a.m.
Last Quarter Sun, Nov 1, 1:28 p.m. Sun, Nov 1, 3:28 p.m.

Two things worth knowing while you're planning. There is no lunar eclipse with this moon — 2026's two total lunar eclipses fell in March and August, and both have already passed. And this one is not a supermoon, whatever the internet tells you in October. The three full supermoons of 2026 are January's Wolf Moon, November's Beaver Moon and December's Cold Moon. The Hunter's Moon just looks enormous because it rises low, which is a trick of your eyes rather than a trick of the orbit — and honestly it is the better show for it.

Afterward

Give whatever you wore that night a wipe before it goes back in the dish. Some of it is ritual and some of it is just that skin oil dulls a finish. Both reasons are good. I keep the how-to in the jewelry cleaning guide, the intention side of it in how to cleanse your jewelry, and the stone-by-stone notes in the crystal care guide.

Then wait. The next new moon is the quiet one where you plant what you decided under all this light — that's a different job, and I walk through it in new moon rituals for beginners. If you're newer to the stones themselves, start at the complete crystal guide instead of here.

And if the whole list above just made you want to lie down: take the gemstone quiz. Four questions, and it will tell you which one of these your October is actually asking for.

I'll be outside on the 25th. Low in the east, about an hour after the sun goes. Come find it.
