Blood Moon Meaning: What the Sky Whispers When It Bleeds

A Blood Moon is a total lunar eclipse — the moon turned copper-red in Earth's shadow. Spiritually it's read as a full moon with the volume up: endings, release, and the kind of clarity that only arrives when you stop looking away.

The last one over Calgary came on March 3, 2026, at about half past four in the morning. If you slept through it, you were in excellent company. The good news is that this guide doesn't expire: the meaning, the ritual and the stones work for whichever eclipse is next, and the dates for the next ones are further down.

If you want the wider map, every one of my moon ritual guides lives in one place, full moons, new moons and named moons together.

What Is a Blood Moon?

A Blood Moon happens during a total lunar eclipse, when Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon. You'd expect the moon to go black. It doesn't. Sunlight bends through Earth's atmosphere on its way past, the blue gets scattered out, and the red gets through and lands on the moon.

Here's the part I love: the light on a blood moon is every sunrise and sunset on Earth, all at once, projected onto the moon. That's the colour you're looking at.

A total eclipse only happens at a full moon, and the red phase, called totality, can last anywhere from a few minutes to well over an hour. The whole thing, partial phases included, runs about three to four hours.

Why Is the Moon Red Tonight? (When It Isn't an Eclipse)

Most of the red moons people search for aren't eclipses at all. If the moon looks orange or red and nobody's announced an eclipse, it's almost always one of these three:

  • It's low on the horizon. Same reason sunsets are orange: you're looking through more air, and the air filters out the blue. A moon that's red at moonrise is usually white again an hour later.
  • There's smoke. Every Alberta summer has a stretch where the moon comes up the colour of a stop sign. That's wildfire smoke doing the same filtering, only more of it.
  • It's autumn. The Harvest and Hunter's Moon rise early and low for several nights in a row, so they spend a lot of time looking gold and copper.

Does a red moon still mean something if it isn't an eclipse? That's your call. I'd read it the way I read any moon that makes me stop on the driveway: as a pause. The sky did something unusual and you noticed. Ask yourself what you were thinking about right before you looked up.

Blood Moon Spiritual Meaning

Across most of the traditions that tracked eclipses, a blood moon is a turning point. Not a disaster, not a blessing. A moment when something that was already in motion speeds up.

In practice, people tend to read it as:

  • Endings and closure. The thing that's been finishing for a while, finishes.
  • Truth coming out. Usually the thing you already half-knew.
  • Emotional release. The cry you've been postponing since spring.
  • A reset. Room cleared for whatever comes next.

Is a blood moon good or bad? Neither. It's a full moon that asks harder questions. If something leaves your life around an eclipse, the eclipse didn't take it. It was already on its way out, and the eclipse is when you finally noticed.

And in love? Blood moons are traditionally the time relationships get honest. Not necessarily end: get honest. The conversation you've been circling tends to happen in eclipse weeks, whether you schedule it or not.

Why eclipse weeks feel like a lot

A regular full moon lights things up. An eclipse is read as the same light with the dial turned. Eclipse weeks can feel emotionally loud, sleep-short and surprising, often all in the same three days.

Which is exactly when a little wearable armour earns its keep. The evil eye has been the go-to protection symbol for thousands of years and pairs well with eclipse grounding work: what the evil eye means and how to wear it. Think of it as a standing "not today" to energy that isn't yours to carry.

When Is the Next Blood Moon?

The next total lunar eclipse anywhere on Earth is December 31, 2028. The catch: it's best seen from Asia, Australia and eastern Europe. In Calgary, the moon sets just as it begins.

The next blood moon you can see from North America is June 25–26, 2029, and it's a long one, with over an hour and a half of totality. Eastern North America gets the whole thing. In Calgary the moon rises at about 9:50 p.m. on June 25 already red, low in the southeast, for the last twenty minutes or so of totality.

Date Type From North America
Mar 3, 2026 Total (blood moon) Seen across North America
Aug 27–28, 2026 Deep partial Seen across the Americas
Feb, Jul & Aug 2027 Penumbral A faint shading only, no red
Jan 11–12, 2028 Small partial Visible, but only a tiny bite
Dec 31, 2028 Total Mostly not; western North America sees only the start as the moon sets
Jun 25–26, 2029 Total All of it in the east; rises already red in the west
Dec 20, 2029 Total Seen rising over North America; best from Europe and Africa

A long wait, which is exactly why the ritual below is built to work for any full moon you'd like to give the eclipse treatment. You don't need the shadow to do the work.

A Blood Moon Ritual for Release

Four steps, about fifteen minutes. Works on the eclipse night, the night after, or any full moon when you need a proper ending.

Step 1: Write what you're releasing

One page. Old identities, habits, attachments, fears. Be specific. "Stress" is not a thing you can release. "Answering work email at 10 p.m." is.

Step 2: Say it out loud

Once, alone, in a normal voice. It's harder to pretend you didn't decide something after you've heard yourself say it.

Step 3: Tear the page up

Burn it if you have a safe place for that; tearing it into the recycling works just as well. The ending is the point, not the fire.

Step 4: Cleanse your jewellery

Set the piece you'll wear for the next chapter on the windowsill overnight. Full walkthrough: how to cleanse your jewellery with moonlight, smoke and sound.

Can You Manifest on a Blood Moon?

People ask this a lot. Yes, but differently. An eclipse isn't the night for calling things in. It's the night for clearing what's in the way of them. The calling-in happens at the new moon two weeks later.

Instead of writing what you want, write:

  • What version of me is done?
  • What belief no longer fits?
  • What fear is ready to go?

Then wear a grounding stone to anchor the next chapter.

Best Crystals for the Blood Moon

Eclipse work asks for release, grounding and protection, not expansion. These four do the job. Pick one; you don't need all of them. None of them do the work for you. They're the reminder on your wrist of what you decided under the red moon. They all live together in the Blood Moon Jewelry collection if you'd rather browse than read.

Black Tourmaline — grounding

The stone you reach for when eclipse week has you wide open. Black tourmaline is traditionally carried for grounding and protection: the one that holds the floor steady while everything else moves.

Wear it now: Raw Black Tourmaline Studs — $78

Amethyst — calm

For the nights the mind won't quiet. Amethyst is the calm one, carried as an intention for spiritual protection and steadier intuition when everything feels loud. Genuine amethyst, set in gold-plated sterling.

Wear it now: Amethyst Pendant Necklace — $65

Labradorite — transformation

Labradorite is the stone for the chapter that's turning but hasn't landed. Grey until it isn't, then the flash comes up out of nowhere, which feels about right for an eclipse. It has its own home here: the full labradorite collection.

Wear it now: Labradorite Faceted Bracelet — $45

Clear Quartz — clarity

Clear quartz is worn for clarity and for sharpening whatever intention you're holding. During an eclipse, pair it with one of the grounding stones rather than wearing it alone: you want the clarity anchored.

Wear it now: Clear Quartz Crown Chakra Bracelet — $28

Stack them instead of choosing

That pairing instinct is the whole point of a stack: one stone to clear, one to hold the floor, one that's just yours. Eclipse energy is not a one-bracelet situation. Blood Moon FAQ

What does a blood moon mean?

A blood moon is the popular name for a total lunar eclipse, when Earth passes directly between the Sun and Moon and the Moon turns coppery red. Spiritually it's read as a turning point: endings, truth coming out, and release. It's a full moon that asks harder questions, not a bad omen.

When is the next blood moon?

The next total lunar eclipse is December 31, 2028, best seen from Asia, Australia and eastern Europe. The next one well placed for North America is June 25–26, 2029, with over an hour and a half of totality. Before that, the 2027 eclipses are faint penumbral ones that don't turn the moon red.

What does a red moon mean if it isn't an eclipse?

Usually that the moon is low on the horizon, or that there's smoke or dust in the air. Both filter out blue light the same way a sunset does. Spiritually, many people still treat an unexpectedly red moon as a cue to pause and notice what they were thinking about.

Is a blood moon good or bad spiritually?

Neither. It's transformational. Blood moons are read as clearing space by closing what no longer belongs, which can feel uncomfortable: endings, revelations, sudden shifts. Most cultures that tracked eclipses saw them as acceleration points, when what was already in motion speeds up.

Should I charge crystals during a lunar eclipse?

Many traditions advise against it. Eclipse energy is read as releasing rather than amplifying, and charging is an amplifying act. Use a blood moon for cleansing instead, with the intention of clearing what's stale. The new moon that follows is the better moment for charging and intention-setting. For care during any moon phase, see the moonlight, smoke and sound cleansing guide.

What does a blood moon mean in astrology?

A total lunar eclipse is read as culmination, closure and fast change. The sign it falls in colours the theme. The March 2026 eclipse was in Virgo, about clearing and reorganising. The December 2028 eclipse falls in Cancer, which points at home and family, and June 2029's is in Capricorn, about work and structure.

What crystals are best for a blood moon?

Stones for release, grounding and protection rather than expansion. Black tourmaline for grounding, amethyst for calm, labradorite for transformation and clear quartz for clarity, paired with one of the others. Wear your chosen piece through the eclipse week and the days after. They're gathered in the Blood Moon Jewelry collection.
