Three months in a row, the full moon is going to come up a little closer than usual. November, December, January. One for the end of the working season, one two nights before Christmas, one in the dead middle of winter.
I'd love to tell you I'll notice the difference. I won't. I've stood in my driveway for plenty of supermoons and not once thought, yes, seven percent wider, I can feel it. What I do notice is the next morning, when half my feed is the same blurry photo of it. A supermoon is the one night of the month everybody looks up at the same time.
That's the reason to care. Not the size. The fact that you get three of those nights, back to back, right across the turn of the year.

The three supermoons: dates and times
| Supermoon | Calgary (Alberta Time) | Eastern | Moon in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beaver Moon | Tue, Nov 24, 2026, 8:53 a.m. | 9:53 a.m. | Gemini |
| Cold Moon | Wed, Dec 23, 2026, 7:28 p.m. | 8:28 p.m. | Cancer |
| Wolf Moon | Fri, Jan 22, 2027, 6:17 a.m. | 7:17 a.m. | Leo |
A note for anyone in Alberta: we stopped changing our clocks on November 1. The province is on Alberta Time year-round now, which is the old summer time. So if a calendar app or an American website tells you the Beaver Moon peaks at 7:53 a.m. Mountain, it's an hour behind. In Calgary it's 8:53.
Two of the three peak in the morning here, and that's fine. Peak is a moment; full is a few nights. Look on the evening before and the evening of each date. For the Beaver Moon that's Monday the 23rd and Tuesday the 24th. For the Wolf Moon, Thursday the 21st and Friday the 22nd. The Cold Moon is the easy one: it rises in the late afternoon of the 23rd and is full a couple of hours after dark.
The Cold Moon is the closest of the three — about 356,700 km away, the nearest full moon of 2026. The Wolf Moon is a close second at about 357,600 km, and the Beaver Moon sits at about 360,800 km.
What a supermoon is (and what it isn't)
The moon's orbit is an oval, not a circle. Once a month it swings to its closest point, called perigee. When a full moon lands near perigee, it looks a touch bigger and brighter. That's the whole thing.
The word itself isn't from astronomy. An astrologer, Richard Nolle, coined it in 1979. Astronomers would rather say perigee full moon, which is why you'll never hear one say supermoon without a slight wince.
There's also no official cut-off, which is why the lists online don't agree. The most common rule, used by most astronomy sites, counts any full moon within 90% of its closest approach. By that rule, 2026 has three supermoons: January's Wolf Moon, November's Beaver Moon and December's Cold Moon. Add January 2027 and you get three in a row across the turn of the year. Some sites use a stricter 360,000 km line, and by that one the Beaver Moon just misses. Both are true. It depends who's holding the ruler.
How much bigger is it, really? Compared with an average full moon, December's will look about 8% wider and about 16% brighter. Compared with the smallest full moon of the year, a "micromoon", it's about 14% wider and 30% brighter. Your eye won't measure that. What it will notice is a moon low on the horizon at moonrise, which looks enormous every month thanks to an illusion your brain plays with trees and rooftops. Go out at moonrise and the supermoon gets the illusion on top.
One more thing it isn't: a supermoon is not a blood moon. A blood moon is a total lunar eclipse, when Earth's shadow turns the moon copper. None of these three are eclipses. If you want that one, it has its own blood moon ritual guide.
What three in a row is asking
A full moon is the moon showing you everything the sun is lighting up. A supermoon is the same light with the dimmer turned up a notch. I don't think it's a different message. I think it's the same message, said a little louder, three times, while you're busy.
And each of the three lands in a different sign, so each one shines on a different room in the house:
November, Gemini — the conversation. The Beaver Moon is a Gemini full moon opposite a Sagittarius sun. Gemini is the talker, the texter, the one who knows exactly what she'd say and hasn't. If something has been sitting unsaid since September, this is the moon that makes it hard to ignore.
December, Cancer — home. The Cold Moon is a Cancer full moon opposite a Capricorn sun. Cancer is the kitchen table and everyone around it. Two nights before Christmas, that hardly needs explaining. It's the closest moon of the three, landing on the most loaded week of the year. I don't think that's a coincidence I'd plan around, but I'd notice it.
January, Leo — you. The Wolf Moon is a Leo full moon opposite an Aquarius sun. Leo is the part of you that wants to be seen and has been very patient about it. After two months of everybody else, the last one turns the light on you.
Conversation, home, self. In that order. That's not a bad shape for the end of a year.

Three stones for the supermoons
None of these do anything to the moon, and the moon does nothing to them. They're reminders. A reminder you can feel on your wrist in the middle of a December Tuesday is worth more than an intention you wrote down and lost.
Moonstone — for the moon itself
If you wear one stone for all three, make it this one. Moonstone has layers inside it that scatter light across the surface instead of bouncing it straight back. That soft, floating glow has a name, adularescence, and it looks like moonlight because it behaves like moonlight.
It's traditionally worn as an intention for intuition and cycles. Three full moons in a row is a cycle you can see. The sterling gemstone studs come in rainbow moonstone and sit where you'll catch them in every mirror between now and January.
Citrine — for the light it's borrowing
Here's the part people forget. The moon doesn't make light. Every bit of that supermoon glow is sunlight, bounced. So the stone I pair with it is the sun's stone.
Citrine is golden quartz, the November birthstone, and traditionally worn for confidence and warmth. It's also my pick for the Gemini moon in November: wear it on the day you finally say the thing. The Faceted Citrine Dainty Bracelet ($54) is the one in the kit, and it stacks with everything.
Clear Quartz — for turning it up
Clear quartz has been called "the amplifier" in crystal circles for as long as I've been in them. I'm cautious with big claims, so here's the honest version: it's worn as an intention for clarity, and for making whatever you're already holding louder. On a moon that's already turned up, that's the point.
Wear it when you want to see something plainly, without the softening. The Clear Quartz Crown Chakra Bracelet ($28) is small-batch and there are only a few left, so if it's gone, moonstone does the same job more gently.
Or wear the sign
Three moons, three signs. If you'd rather wear the sky than a stone, the Zodiac Constellation Necklace ($45) comes in all twelve: Gemini for November, Cancer for December, Leo for January. Or your own sign, which is the one you'll keep wearing in March. It's waterproof steel, so it survives a winter of dishes, and the Celestial Moon Ring beside it is the same.

A supermoon ritual in three parts
One page. Three entries. Ten minutes a month. This is built for someone who has a life, not an altar.
- Find the page now. One sheet of paper, folded in thirds. Label the panels November, December, January. Put it somewhere you'll see it: the junk drawer, the inside of a cupboard door. Not a journal you'll lose.
- November 23 or 24 — the unsaid thing. Go outside at moonrise, even for a minute. Then write one line in the first panel: the thing I haven't said, and who to. Say it before the next moon. That's the whole assignment.
- December 22 or 23 — the table. Second panel: who I'm glad is at the table, and what I'm done carrying for everyone at it. One line each. If December is chaos at your house, the 22nd counts.
- January 21 or 22 — you. Third panel: one thing I want to be seen doing this year. Not a resolution. A thing you'd like someone to notice.
- Put the piece on each time. Whatever you chose — the moonstone, the citrine, your sign. Put it on deliberately on the night, and wear it through the next day. It isn't doing anything. You are. It's there so you don't quietly forget by Thursday.
Then read all three panels together on the 23rd of January. It's the most useful page I'll write all winter, and it takes about as long as making tea.
Who this is for
The woman who means to look up and doesn't. Who sees everyone's moon photo on Facebook the next morning and thinks, oh, that was last night.
This year you get three chances in three months. Miss one, catch the next. The moon has been patient with all of us for a very long time.
Each supermoon, in full
Each of the three has its own guide with the full meaning, stones and ritual. The Beaver Moon guide covers November and what you've built. The Cold Moon guide covers December and what this year cost. The Wolf Moon guide covers January and who's still out there. Every other moon of the year lives in the moon ritual guides.
If you want to plant something new between them, the new moons land on November 9, December 8 and January 7. New moon rituals for beginners walks you through those.

Supermoon FAQ
Q: When are the supermoons in 2026?
A: January 3 (Wolf Moon), November 24 (Beaver Moon) and December 23 (Cold Moon). The January 22, 2027 Wolf Moon makes it three in a row across the turn of the year. In Calgary, the November one peaks at 8:53 a.m. and the December one at 7:28 p.m., Alberta Time.
Q: Which supermoon is the biggest?
A: The Cold Moon on December 23, 2026. At about 356,700 km, it's the closest full moon of the year, and slightly closer than January's.
Q: Can you see the difference with the naked eye?
A: Barely. December's is about 8% wider and 16% brighter than an average full moon, which is hard to judge with nothing to compare it to. Watch at moonrise, when it sits low behind trees and rooftops. That's when it looks biggest.
Q: Is a supermoon the same as a blood moon?
A: No. A supermoon is about distance. A blood moon is a total lunar eclipse, when Earth's shadow turns the moon red. None of the three supermoons this winter is an eclipse.
Q: Does a supermoon mean anything spiritually?
A: In most moon practices it's treated as the full moon turned up: the same meaning, louder. Use it for the same thing you'd use any full moon for, which is seeing clearly and letting go, rather than starting something new.
Q: What crystals go with a supermoon?
A: Moonstone for the moon itself, citrine for the sunlight it reflects, and clear quartz for clarity. None of them do the work. They're reminders of what you decided under it.
Q: Should I charge my jewellery under a supermoon?
A: You can, the same as any full moon. In an Alberta winter, a windowsill beats the deck; cold is hard on glued settings. The crystal care guide covers which stones mind it.
