The Cold Moon peaks on the evening of Wednesday, December 23 — 7:28 PM here in Calgary. Which means the biggest full moon of the entire year happens two nights before Christmas, in the exact window when nobody has a spare minute to look up.
I have missed it more than once. Wrapping something at the kitchen table, arguing with tape, the dog underfoot — and outside, above the garage, the last full moon of the year going up over the snow with nobody watching it. Some years I catch it on the way to the recycling bin at eleven at night, in slippers, in a housecoat, holding a wine glass I forgot I was holding.
That's the whole ritual, really. Going outside once.

When the Cold Moon peaks in 2026
The December full moon — the Cold Moon — reaches 100% illumination on Wednesday, December 23, 2026 at 7:28 PM Alberta time (8:28 PM Eastern; 01:28 UTC on the 24th). If you're reading this from somewhere east of Ontario, it technically tips over into Christmas Eve. Here in Alberta it is squarely a December 23 event, and it will be rising in the east right around dinner.
Three things make this one worth going outside for:
- It's the last full moon of 2026. There isn't another one until the Wolf Moon in January.
- It's a supermoon — the closest of the year. Three of 2026's full moons qualify, and this is the nearest of the three, so it will read noticeably larger and brighter than an ordinary full moon.
- It's the first full moon of winter. The solstice falls on Monday, December 21, so the Cold Moon arrives two days into the new season rather than at the end of the old one.
It looks full for about three nights — the 22nd, 23rd and 24th all count. If the 23rd is chaos at your house, take the 22nd. The moon does not check your calendar.
What the Cold Moon means
The name is not mystical. It's practical, and it's old. Cold Moon comes from Mohawk tradition, and it means what it says — the time of the cold. Other names for the same moon are just as blunt. The Mohican called it the Long Night Moon, both because the nights are longest now and because this particular moon rides high and stays up longer than any other in the year. Old European calendars call it the Moon Before Yule, or the Oak Moon. Dakota, Lakota and Sioux traditions name it for when deer shed their antlers — a note in the calendar about when to go looking on the ground for material.
Notice that none of those names are about celebration. They're about endurance, and about paying attention. These are names given by people who were counting how much firewood was left.
Which makes the Cold Moon the odd one out in December. Every other message you receive this month is asking you to be festive. This one isn't. It's asking a much quieter question, and it's the one most women I talk to in December are already asking anyway:
What did this year cost me, and what am I not carrying into the next one?
That is not a new year's resolution. Those come in nine days and they're mostly about adding things. This is subtraction. This is the last honest look before the noise of January.
The astrology backs the same read, if you follow it: the Sun is in Capricorn and the full moon sits opposite, in Cancer. Capricorn is the ledger. Cancer is the house, the table, the people at it. A Cancer full moon is the one that surfaces feelings about home — who's there, who isn't, and what you've been holding for everyone else.
The Cold Moon is a release moon, not a manifestation moon. It closes. It doesn't open. That's what the new moon two weeks later is for.
The three stones for the Cold Moon
None of these do the work. You do. They're a reminder tied to your wrist so you don't quietly forget what you decided at seven-thirty on a cold driveway.
Moonstone — for the part of you that's tired of being reasonable
Moonstone is a feldspar with a layered internal structure, and that layering is what makes light float across the surface instead of bouncing off it. The word for it is adularescence. It looks like moonlight because it behaves like moonlight.
It's traditionally worn as an intention for intuition and cycles — for trusting the read you already have instead of talking yourself out of it. With the moon in Cancer, that's exactly the register. Cancer is the sign that knows something is wrong at a dinner table three seconds before anybody says a word.
Wear it where you can see it. The sterling gemstone studs come in moonstone, and they catch candlelight in a way nothing else in the box does.

Labradorite — for the long night
Labradorite is grey until it isn't. Flat, unremarkable, almost concrete-coloured — and then it turns in the light and there's blue and gold underneath. It is the single most on-the-nose stone for a Long Night Moon that exists, and I say that as someone normally suspicious of on-the-nose.
Traditionally worn as an intention for protection through transition, and for holding your own centre when everything around you is loud. In the last ten days of December, that is not a metaphor.
This is the one for the dinner, not just the driveway. Labradorite is a working stone. Wear it through the parts of the holiday that require you to be gracious. The labradorite drop earrings are the easy yes; the faceted bracelet is the one I wear most.

Garnet — for the hearth, and for what comes next
Garnet is January's birthstone, and the Cold Moon sits right on the seam between the two months, which is how it earns a place here. Deep red, warm, unfussy. It has been carried as a travelling stone for centuries — worn as an intention for safe return, and for keeping a fire lit when there isn't much fuel.
If moonstone is the read and labradorite is the armour, garnet is the reason you bother. It's the stone for the woman who is glad to be at the table, even a table that's complicated.
My pick is the Garnet Moon Necklace — the piece that ended up on The Vampire Diaries, which is a sentence I still find funny to type. A moon on a chain, for the last moon of the year. I didn't plan that, but I'll take it.

The Cold Moon ritual (about eleven minutes)
No supplies you don't already have. If it feels precious, you're doing more than I do.
- Go outside. That's the hard part. Coat over pyjamas is correct and traditional. If it's cloudy, go anyway — the moon is up there regardless, and this is not a viewing party.
- Stand still for one full minute. Long enough for the cold to register. That's the point. This moon is named for a sensation, so have the sensation.
- Name three things this year cost you. Out loud if you're alone, in your head if the neighbours are up. Not complaints — costs. Time, sleep, a friendship, a version of yourself you liked. Be specific. “It was a hard year” is not an answer.
- Name one you are putting down. Only one. This is where people over-reach and then carry all three into February anyway.
- Go back inside and write it on something you'll throw out. A receipt, the back of a gift tag. Then throw it out on Boxing Day with the wrapping paper. The disposal is the ritual — the writing is just the handle.
- Put the stone on. Whichever of the three you chose. Wear it through to New Year's Eve as a reminder of what you named. It isn't doing anything. You are. It's there so you can't quietly forget by the 29th. Nothing on hand? The Celestial Moon Ring is non-tarnish and survives a whole December of dishes.
Who this is for
The woman running the holiday. Who has three grocery lists, one of which is in her head, and a mother-in-law arriving Thursday, and who has not had ten uninterrupted minutes since the first week of November.
You are not going to build an altar. You are going to stand in the driveway for eleven minutes on December 23 because it is the only eleven minutes nobody is going to ask you for.
That counts. That has always counted.
After the Cold Moon
If you worked the Beaver Moon in November, this is where that arc closes: Beaver asked whether what you built would hold, and the Cold Moon asks what it cost. The next full moon is the Wolf Moon in January, and it has an entirely different job — that one's about the year ahead and it is much louder about it. Read that one in the first week of January, not before.
If you want the shorter version of everything above, the winter solstice ritual guide runs two days ahead of this one and pairs with it neatly. And if you're building a moon practice rather than doing a one-off, the full set of moon ritual guides lives here.

Cold Moon FAQ
Q: When is the Cold Moon in 2026?
A: Wednesday, December 23, 2026, peaking at 7:28 PM Alberta time (8:28 PM Eastern). It will look full on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th, so take whichever night is quietest at your house.
Q: Is the Cold Moon a supermoon?
A: Yes — and it's the closest of 2026's three supermoons, which makes it the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. Look just after moonrise, when it sits low and reads even larger.
Q: Why is it called the Cold Moon?
A: It's a Mohawk name for December's full moon, meaning the time of the cold. It's also called the Long Night Moon, the Moon Before Yule, and the Oak Moon.
Q: What crystals are used for the Cold Moon?
A: Moonstone for intuition, labradorite for protection through transition, and garnet for warmth and safe return. None of them do anything on their own — they're worn as reminders of what you decided.
Q: Can I do a full moon ritual if it's cloudy or too cold to go outside?
A: Yes. The moon is up regardless. Open a window and stand at it for a minute. The ritual is the naming, not the viewing.
Q: Is the Cold Moon a good time to set intentions?
A: It's better for releasing than for setting. Full moons close things. If you want to set intentions, the new moon on the other side of it is the better slot — the new moon guide in Keep Reading covers that.
Q: Should I cleanse my jewellery under the Cold Moon?
A: You can, and it's a lovely ritual — but check the stone first. Some settings and softer stones don't love a night outside in an Alberta December. The crystal care guide in Keep Reading covers which is which.
