"The Masks We Wear" | As Seen on Bones, S11 E6 | Original Design

This is the original mask necklace worn on Bones by Emily Deschanel as Dr. Temperance Brennan, in "The Senator in the Street Sweeper" — season 11, episode 6, aired 5 November 2015 on FOX. She wore it throughout the episode.

When the chance came to gift to Bones, I already knew what it had to be. I'd been working with these hand-carved Ghanaian masks for a while — I had already used them in other designs — and the minute Bones came up, knowing how deeply that show lives in anthropology, it was the only right answer. I sat down with a pencil and a sketchpad and built the piece for them. In the opening scene where it finally appeared, I watched the mask pendant move from left to right on screen — such a tiny detail, but to me it felt like a mischievous little nod from the universe.

Why it's special

  • True screen-worn original: the exact design worn on Bones, S11 E6 — not a replica or "inspired by" piece.
  • Fair Trade Ghanaian mask: each mask is hand-carved, so no two necklaces are quite the same.
  • Artist-made: designed and handcrafted by Andrea, founder of Mystic Soul Jewelry (formerly Jewelry by Andrea and Andrea Kelly Designs).
  • Smoky quartz: a grounding, steadying stone — properties Brennan herself would have approved of.
  • Perfect for fans: a subtle way to wear your love for Bones — more artful talisman than obvious merch.

Energy & Meaning

Mask symbols have always fascinated me — they're playful, a bit mischievous, and deeply symbolic. They represent the roles we play, the versions of ourselves we reveal, and the magic of transformation.

On Bones, this necklace became part of that world of intellect, intuition, and mystery. Off-screen, it's a reminder that:

  • You're allowed to evolve and change.
  • You can choose when to be fully seen and when to keep your magic close.
  • The universe has a way of placing you exactly where you're meant to be — even if the steps feel mysterious at the time.

Design & Materials

  • Fair Trade hand-carved tribal mask from Ghana, in warm brass and copper tones
  • Smoky quartz and antiqued beads
  • 18 inches (45.7 cm)
  • Nickel-free chain and findings, comfortable for everyday wear
  • Each mask is hand-carved, so every necklace has its own character

How to Wear & Style

  • Everyday mystery: pair with a simple tee or sweater to let the mask do the talking.
  • Layered look: combine with shorter chokers or longer talismans for a more witchy, story-rich stack.
  • Subtle fandom signal: only fellow fans will recognise it — everyone else just sees an intriguing, artful necklace.

How It Got There

The Bones wardrobe team found my work through a stylist gift bag the year before. That's the part I love: one bag of handmade jewelry sent off with no guarantees, and a year later Emily Deschanel is wearing my necklace on FOX.

It opened a run I still find hard to believe. 5 November 2015 — this mask on Bones. 10 December 2015 — my green agate earrings on Bones again. 29 January 2016 — the matching green agate necklace on The Vampire Diaries. Three placements, one television season, two networks. I wrote the whole story down, gift bag and all, in As Seen On: The Real Story.

I began as Jewelry by Andrea, spent over 12 years creating as Andrea Kelly Designs, and today you know my work as Mystic Soul Jewelry. Through every name, it has always been me at the bench.
