What It Carries
💎 Etched Agate — three beads
Made by the technique that produces dzi beads: alkaline paste, then heat, and the pattern is fired permanently into the agate rather than sitting on the surface. These three came out reticulated instead of eyed — dark brown polygons over a pale cream ground, separated by thin light channels. It is giraffe hide, and I have never been able to see anything else in them. Reproduction beads: new agate, old method, no invented age.
💎 Black Onyx
Faceted 6 mm, spacing the agate so each patterned bead gets room to be looked at. The boundary stone — steady, unbothered, quietly firm.
💎 Fair Trade Brass
Solid brass beads from fair trade artisans, with a warm tone plated gold never quite reaches. They are what brings the browns in the agate forward.
✨ Together
Three patterned beads, black facets, warm brass, long chain. Old marks on new stone, on something you can wear to work.
How This Was Made
I have been collecting dzi and etched agate for eighteen years. These three sat unused for most of that time — the giraffe pattern is odd enough that nothing ever quite matched it, until the black onyx did. Kelly built it at my bench in Calgary: twelve centimetres of beadwork, brass spacers set by eye, a medallion toggle I chose because it deserved to be seen. One necklace. The beads are gone.

Wear It Your Way
Long over a sweater, doubled over a collar, or turned so the toggle sits at the front — that clasp was not designed to hide behind your neck. The matching two-eye dzi bead earrings came out of the same eighteen-year stash, if you want the pair.
