Where the Infinity Symbol Comes From
The ∞ sign itself is surprisingly young. The English mathematician John Wallis introduced it in 1655 to mean a quantity without limit. Nobody's certain why he chose that shape. One theory is a variant of the old Roman numeral for 1,000; another is the Greek letter omega, the last letter, the end that isn't one.
The idea is much older than the sign. The Ouroboros, a serpent swallowing its own tail, shows up in Egyptian and Greek art and later in alchemy as an image of eternity and renewal. Celtic knotwork winds without a start or finish. The Tibetan Buddhist Endless Knot weaves together things that can't be pulled apart. Different shapes, same instinct: some things don't have a last page.
The common mix-ups: the infinity sign is a single loop; the Endless Knot is an interwoven pattern that stresses interdependence over duration. The Ouroboros carries the same meaning but with a serpent, which is a different piece of jewelry entirely. And yes, it's an 8 lying down. Numerologists make a lot of that.
Infinity and Love
Love is where most people meet this symbol, and it earns the job. Infinite love is love with no fixed end point. It doesn't thin out with distance, and it continues through the kinds of endings life hands out.
